After tasting two versions of banh mi with a price difference of 12 times, a Western customer said he preferred the 20,000 VND version on the sidewalk, "creating a different feeling that is difficult for any restaurant to bring".
David is a tourist from the US who recently traveled to Vietnam. He stopped in Ho Chi Minh City and spent time experiencing some of the attractive destinations and dishes.
David said that the cuisine in Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular is very rich. He tried the popular banh mi on the street and experienced the expensive version in the restaurant to feel the difference.
The first place David visited was a sandwich shop on a street in Ward 4, District 3. Here, he ordered a grilled meat sandwich for 20,000 VND.
He commented that the sandwich had a crispy crust, soft inside, filled with fresh ingredients with a sauce that blended salty, spicy and fatty flavors.
“This sandwich is amazing, you have to try it at least once. The roast pork has a crispy skin, the meat is juicy and tender, adding texture and flavor to the dish,” David described.
The customer even claimed, "This is the best sandwich I've ever eaten."
The second place David chose was a restaurant in District 1. Here, David tasted some creative Vietnamese dishes with enhanced flavors, including the "tiny" banh mi dish priced at 240,000 VND.
This sandwich is about the size of two fingertips and is served with pate, wagyu beef, etc. When tasting it, the Western guest commented that this sandwich has a crispy crust and a delicious, unique flavor.
He confirmed that this luxurious version of banh mi is delicious, creative and uniquely varied, but the price is a bit high, because it includes service and space costs.
After trying two different types of bread with a price difference of 12 times, David said that street bread is more to his taste.
Not only is it affordable, according to David, the street-side banh mi also creates a different feeling that is hard to find in any restaurant. “Banh mi is a dish that is hard to find in any restaurant that can bring the same flavor and atmosphere as the street-side banh mi.
I love the atmosphere and the feeling of sitting and eating on the street, where people have more opportunities to connect with each other, feel each other's energy rather than just focusing on the food," David expressed.
Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, David said that in terms of taste and atmosphere, he likes street bread.
Western visitors believe that banh mi is a street food, so experiencing this dish at restaurants and sidewalk stalls will give a more authentic feeling.
“Banh mi is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. You can try many types of banh mi with different fillings everywhere, the price is also affordable, 15,000-20,000 VND/piece, enough to fill you up but still delicious,” David added.
In addition to Ho Chi Minh City, the Western tourist also spent a short time exploring Hanoi. He admitted that this is one of his favorite destinations in the world because of its beautiful scenery and diverse, delicious food.
“Banh cuon is also on the list of my favorite dishes of all time,” he shared.
