Foreign guests complain... rooster crowing every morning disrupts sleep

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên23/03/2023

The complaint was immediately ridiculed by Balinese people. Many Balinese people said that it was evidence of tourists' indifference to the culture and customs of the indigenous people.

Responding to the complaint, Bali's tourism authority stressed that tourists should either learn to respect local culture or face deportation if they continue to file another complaint.

“Keep as many chickens as possible,” Bali Governor I Wayan Koster encouraged locals. “If tourists don’t like the sound of roosters crowing, there’s no need to come to Bali.”

According to The New York Post , resentment against foreigners is growing in the "tourist paradise" of Bali as tourists are caught having sex in public, violating traffic laws, working illegally as tattoo artists, smuggling drugs and disrespecting sacred areas.

Balinese feel annoyed by too many tourists

Bali residents have been calling out tourists for illegal or embarrassing behavior on social media accounts, including the popular Instagram platform @moscow... People can post information about foreigners breaking the law or causing "uncivilized" scenes to the account, which has 32,500 followers.

“Foreigners are blatantly promoting illegal businesses on social media and creating their own business ‘bubbles’ within their fellow countrymen,” the account owner told Vice World News.

Bali is predominantly Hindu and the island has been one of the world's top holiday destinations for decades and relies heavily on tourism. But locals are fed up with unruly visitors.

Since reopening to tourists and lifting Covid-19 restrictions, travel enthusiasts from around the world have flocked to the beautiful island to visit, work from home and even dodge bombs.

Nearly 60,000 Russians visited Bali last year and about 20,000 have arrived each month since September, Al Jazeera reported.

Many Russian tourists come to Bali for long stays

“I think Bali has always been seen… as ‘the last paradise on earth.’ The community is very welcoming, the Balinese are very friendly and hospitable. However, sometimes foreigners don’t fully understand that Bali is still their home. They see it as a Disneyland for their enjoyment,” Ravinjay Kuckreja, a PhD researcher in Balinese culture at Denpasar Hindu University, told Vice.

Under Indonesian immigration law, foreigners who break the law or disturb public order can be deported.

Bali authorities have announced plans to ban tourists from renting motorbikes, install large, multilingual billboards instructing tourists on how to behave, and revoke visa privileges for Russian and Ukrainian tourists.

Bali’s governor has proposed a ban on international tourists riding motorbikes. While waiting for the ban to be officially implemented, the local tourism authority took the opportunity to remind tourists of the penalties for violating the law, which range from a fine to deportation.
