Connecting more than 150 Vietnamese-Australian educational and training institutions

The Vietnam-Australia Higher Education Cooperation Conference in Hanoi (May 17) and Ho Chi Minh City (May 18) connected more than 150 educational and training institutions of the two countries, sharing knowledge and exploring cooperation opportunities.

The workshop was organized by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) with the support of the Australian Department of Education.

Education is at the heart of the relationship between Australia and Vietnam. Australian and Vietnamese educational institutions have shown increasing interest in higher education cooperation after many years of engagement.

The workshop is a follow-up to the Education Cooperation and Investment Conference hosted by the Ministry of Education and Training in September 2022 and the Online Higher Education Cooperation Workshop hosted by Austrade in August 2021. This week’s workshop series provides an opportunity for both sides to discuss key topics in the current higher education landscape and engage in face-to-face discussions to explore multilateral cooperation and trade partnerships.

Ms. Rebecca Ball, Senior Trade and Investment Counsellor of Austrade Vietnam, emphasized that Vietnam and Australia have built a strong strategic partnership over the past 50 years. Cooperation between the two countries in people-to-people relations through education is one of the important foundations and also one of the longest-standing areas of engagement.

“Our strong education relationship with Vietnam is demonstrated at both the government and educational institution levels. It is incredible to see how our education cooperation has developed over the past decades,” said Ms. Rebecca Ball.

Vietnam-Australia educational cooperation is increasingly diverse. Vietnam is the 5th country in terms of the number of international students studying in Australia (in 2022, there were 26,434 Vietnamese students studying in Australia). Cooperation relationships such as transnational education (TNE) programs have received great attention with more than 20,000 Vietnamese students studying Australian degree programs in Vietnam. Currently, there are more than 80,000 Vietnamese alumni who graduated from Australian educational institutions returning and contributing to their homeland.

Australia is Vietnam’s leading partner in education cooperation with 300 different cooperation programs from undergraduate to postgraduate, from bridging education programs to joint programs and other research activities. These programs cover many fields such as law, business, information technology, engineering, health, tourism and agriculture with strong interest from both Australia and Vietnam to build new partnerships.

The Vietnam-Australia Higher Education Cooperation Conference 2023 was attended by 17 Australian universities and educational institutions and attracted great interest from Vietnamese educational institutions from many different provinces and cities.

The talks covered key topics in the current education market, from Australia and Vietnam’s readiness for education collaboration, to aligning partnerships with future employment and industry needs, and developing graduate employability through university-industry linkages.
