Mr. Tra Viet Hoang (Bay Hoang), Head of Hamlet 2, Khanh Lam Commune, U Minh District; has been attached to the Nuoc Phen Canal for more than 30 years. Through many ups and downs, he has witnessed the remarkable changes of this land.
From 1974 to 2000, people's lives were quite difficult because they could not grow rice due to the alum water. Not only rice but also other crops could not be grown. Mr. Bay Hoang said: "Before, the canal was very small, overgrown with reeds, it was difficult for two boats to pass. The canal was shallow and alum, people who wanted to cross the canal just had to roll up their pants and wade across. Unable to produce, many people left their hometowns to find a living far away."
After a while, many people who had left returned to start a business on their homeland. The Nuoc Phen Canal, which is more than 2 kilometers long, after being relocated, the irrigation system was upgraded, the canal was cleared, and became a place for people to trade goods.

The Nuoc Phen Canal changes every day. Many solid houses are built, demonstrating its development. |
Hamlet 2 has 322 households, of which nearly 200 households are concentrated in the Nuoc Phen canal. In 2010, the hamlet had 65 poor households, now there are only 10 poor households.
When the roads are clear, students' travel is also easier. Located next to the Nuoc Phen canal, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Primary School (level 2 national standard) has nurtured knowledge for many children here. Mr. Nguyen Hoang Da, the school's principal, excitedly said: "In the past, students traveled by rowboat, crossing the Nuoc Phen canal, which was not safe. Now there is no need to worry anymore. 100% of school-age children go to school; especially the way to school - home is very safe, parents rarely have to pick them up and drop them off, and can rest assured to develop the economy at home."
The appearance of the homeland is increasingly renewed, with the highlight being the green fences and the green - clean - beautiful environment. Mr. Le Thanh Mai, Vice Chairman of Khanh Lam Commune People's Committee, confided: "Hamlet 2 is one of the key hamlets of the commune in building the new rural area. Up to now, the people's lives have been stable, the poverty rate has decreased every year. This result is also thanks to the awareness and responsibility of the local government, especially the industriousness and perseverance of the people to escape poverty."
The rural road along the Nuoc Phen canal is a testament to the Party and State’s concern for the people in the process of building a new rural area. Mr. Tran Van Truong in Hamlet 2, excitedly said: “This road used to be 2 meters wide, now it has been widened by another meter, making it easier for vehicles to travel, cars can reach the house”.
Mr. Tran Van Truong (right) regularly trims the row of trees in front of his house, contributing to the locality's construction of the new rural area.
Actively promoting tree planting, creating a beautiful environment, working hard with the fields and gardens, implementing the rice-shrimp model, Mr. Vu Lang, Head of the Veterans Association of Hamlet 2, said: "The village is flourishing, people's lives are also increasingly developing. Although my hometown is Bac Ninh, when I came to live in this land, I considered it my second homeland. Following Uncle Ho's example, despite my old age, I still work hard, contributing a small part to building my homeland."
Young Party member of the forest land Huynh Mong Thuy (left) is always exemplary, taking the lead in production and economic development movements.
Actively competing in labor, building new rural areas, people develop the economy with organic rice models and some other effective models. A typical example is Ms. Huynh Mong Thuy, a young party member, Secretary of the Youth Union, Head of the Women's Association of Hamlet 2, after nearly 3 years of doing business in the locality, she has achieved certain successes, especially the black apple snail farming model for high profits.
Mr. Le Thanh Mai added: "For Hamlet 2, all issues are "first-class", especially the economic development of the people along the Nuoc Phen canal, which is a model for other hamlets to learn from"./.
