Sydney authorities say the attacker was shot by police after fighting nine people at the busy Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre.

New South Wales Police released a statement saying the perpetrator was dead and that “five victims have now lost their lives as a result of the actions of this offender”.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there was no indication yet of the gunman’s motive. “This was a horrific act of violence, indiscriminately targeting innocent people who were out shopping on a normal Saturday,” he told a news conference.

Eight people, including a child, were taken to hospital, a New South Wales Ambulance spokesman said.
