Sources in the Middle East reported that on June 29, the Israeli army announced that they had bombed a military building of the Hezbollah force in the village of Hula, southern Lebanon, after discovering armed members of the group there.

Earlier, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee announced that two anti-tank missiles launched from southern Lebanon landed in the village of Misgav Am, northern Israel, causing no injuries. In response, Israeli forces shelled the suspected missile launch sites.

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for dozens of rocket attacks, including those targeting a military base near the city of Kiryat Shmona, as well as explosive-laden drones targeting a military site in the western Galilee and several other attacks along the border.

The escalation of tensions between Israel and Hezbollah has raised fears of a wider conflict in the region. There has been a spike in shelling between the two sides this month.

In light of the conflict, the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon has called on its citizens to leave the country immediately.

Saudi Arabia also asked its citizens to comply with a travel ban to the country. The embassy stressed that it was closely monitoring events in southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that a possible all-out war between Israel and the Hezbollah movement in Lebanon would have catastrophic consequences for the entire Middle East.

The US military has also begun deploying troops to Lebanon and Israel to evacuate citizens in case the confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah escalates.

On June 29, Arab League Assistant Secretary General Hossam Zaki announced that the bloc had removed Hezbollah from the list of "terrorist organizations".

Speaking to Egypt's Al-Qahera TV a day after his visit to Lebanon, Zaki said: "In previous decisions of the Arab League, Hezbollah was considered a terrorist organization and this issue was reflected in the resolutions, which led to the severing of contacts with Hezbollah based on these decisions... The member states of the Arab League agreed that Hezbollah should not be considered a terrorist organization."

Mr. Zaki visited Lebanon from June 23 to 28 and met with groups representing different political views in Lebanon. The discussions focused on reducing tensions in southern Lebanon since the start of the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, Mr. Zaki held a meeting with the head of the Loyalist Resistance Movement, Muhammad Raad, which is affiliated with Hezbollah. This was the first contact between the Arab League and Hezbollah in more than a decade.

The Arab League has designated Hezbollah as a “terrorist organization” with reservations from Lebanon and Iraq since 2016. At the same time, the Arab League also called on Hezbollah to “stop promoting extremism and sectarianism, refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of states and not participate in any actions supporting terrorism and terrorists in the region.”

Regarding the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the US news site Axios on June 29 quoted sources saying that Washington has put forward “new wording” for the contents of the proposed ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and the Hamas Islamic movement in the Gaza Strip.

The amendment was made in consultation with representatives of Qatar and Egypt, and concerns Phase 1 of a three-phase ceasefire proposal previously put forward by the US. The aim of the amendment is to seek assurances for the implementation of Phase 2, which involves “maintaining a lasting ceasefire” in Gaza.

Axios quoted a source as saying: “The US is working hard to find a formula to ensure the deal is signed,” while another source said that if Hamas agrees, “this deal can be signed.”

The US ceasefire proposal announced by President Joe Biden on May 31 has so far been deadlocked, as Israel and Hamas continue to disagree on key terms. Hamas said the proposal did not provide clear guarantees on the transition from the first phase of the plan, which includes a six-week ceasefire and the release of some hostages, to the second phase, which includes a permanent ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there were still "gaps" between the ceasefire proposal approved by the Israeli government and the version announced by President Joe Biden, and that the US's description of the agreement was "incomprehensive".
