CNN quoted a statement from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman saying that the IDF launched the "Iron Sword" military operation against the Hamas movement after a surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group on Israeli territory early on the morning of October 7.
The IDF also said dozens of its fighter jets are currently attacking Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip.
“In order to prevent Hamas rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip into Israel, the IDF is currently attacking enemy targets in the area,” the IDF said in a statement on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.

Israel also declared a state of war alert on the morning of October 7 after the first attacks took place.
Speaking about the current situation, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel "will win this war" against Hamas.
“Hamas made a grave mistake this morning and launched a war against the state of Israel. IDF soldiers are fighting the enemy everywhere. I call on all Israeli citizens to follow security instructions. The state of Israel will win this war,” said Minister Gallant.
According to Israeli media, at least 100 people were injured across Israel in Hamas attacks. There is no official death toll yet.
Earlier in the morning of October 7, the commander of the military branch of the Hamas movement, Muhammad Al-Deif, said the group was launching an operation called "Al-Aqsa Storm" targeting Israeli positions, airports and military positions.
Also according to Muhammad Al-Deif, Hamas has launched at least 5,000 rockets into Israeli territory.
The military wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement, the Al-Qassam Brigades, has announced a campaign against Israel, claiming to have launched 5,000 rockets.
The escalating conflict between Hamas and Israel has raised concerns about the risk of a large-scale military confrontation similar to the 11-day war in the Gaza Strip in 2021 that killed hundreds of people.
