[Infographic] Labor and employment in the second quarter of 2024
The labor force and the number of employed people in the second quarter of 2024 increased compared to the previous quarter and increased compared to the same period last year. The average monthly income of workers decreased compared to the previous quarter and increased compared to the same period last year; the unemployment rate and the underemployment rate both increased compared to the previous quarter. In the first six months of 2024, the labor force aged 15 and over was 52.5 million, an increase of 196.6 thousand people compared to the same period last year; the employed population was 51.4 million, an increase of 195.7 thousand people; the unemployment rate was 2.27% and the underemployment rate among working-age people was 2.05%.

In the first six months of 2024, total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue at current prices are estimated at VND 3,098.7 trillion, up 8.6% over the same period last year (up 11.3% over the same period in 2023), excluding price factors, up 5.7% (up 8.8% over the same period in 2023).

The S&P Global Vietnam Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose sharply to 54.7 in June, up from 50.3 in May.

Compared to December 2023, the CPI in June increased by 1.40% and compared to the same period last year, it increased by 4.34%.

From 3:00 p.m. on June 27, the price of E5 RON 92 gasoline increased by VND510/liter, while that of RON 95 gasoline increased by VND550/liter. Since the beginning of the year, the price of RON 95 gasoline has increased 15 times and decreased 11 times. After adjustment, the maximum retail price of E5 RON 92 gasoline is VND22,010/liter and that of RON 95 gasoline is VND23,010/liter.

The latest preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs show that Vietnam's total import-export turnover in the first 15 days of June 2024 reached 31.126 billion USD. Of which, exported phones and components reached 2.03 billion USD, up 17.6% over the same period last month; electronics, computers and components reached 2.868 billion USD, up 10% over the same period.

From 3:00 p.m. on June 6, the price of E5 RON 92 gasoline decreased by 610 VND/liter, while RON 95 gasoline decreased by 540 VND/liter. Since the beginning of the year, the price of RON 95 gasoline has increased 12 times and decreased 11 times. After adjustment, the maximum retail price of E5 RON 92 gasoline is 21,140 VND/liter and RON 95 gasoline is 21,970 VND/liter. Oil products have new prices of 17,280-19,550 VND/liter compared to 7 days ago. Of which, diesel oil decreased by 320 VND, down to 19,420 VND/liter. Kerosene and fuel oil decreased by 250-380 VND.

The export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in May 2024 is estimated at 5.06 billion USD, up 11.2% compared to May 2023; bringing the total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first 5 months of 2024 to 24.14 billion USD, up 21% over the same period in 2023. Of which, the export value of agricultural products reached 13.11 billion USD, up 27.7%; the export value of livestock products reached 199 million USD, up 5.6%; the export value of aquatic products reached 3.5 billion USD, up 3.6%; the export value of forestry products reached 6.58 billion USD, up 22.7%; the export value of production inputs reached 756 million USD, down 1.3%; the export value of salt reached 1.9 million USD, down 1.4%.

Vietnam's manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) remained unchanged at 50.3 in May, indicating an improvement in business conditions for the sector for the second month running. The rate of input cost inflation accelerated significantly in the month, prompting manufacturers to raise their selling prices for the first time since February 2024.
