“ Why should we punish our players? ”, Mr. Erick Thohir told the media on May 24 in Jakarta.
“ Of course, we will have to discipline them. U22 Indonesia was aggressive after being provoked, so I think we can forgive them ,” the PSSI president emphasized.
PSSI President Erick Thohir is lenient with the Indonesian U22 members who participated in the brawl at the 32nd SEA Games final.
Mr. Erick Thohir continued: “ We have great respect for Vietnam and Thailand as well as other countries participating in the 2023 SEA Games. I appreciate the FAT (Football Association of Thailand - PV). Maybe they have their own mechanism. I do not want to interfere with their decision and do not want to comment .”
Previously, FAT punished members of the U22 team who participated in the brawl in the extra time of the final match of the 32nd SEA Games. Mr. Prasadchok Chokmoh (goalkeeper coach), Mr. Mayed Madad and Mr. Patrawut Wongsripuek (team leader) were banned from participating in the Thai national team for one year. Goalkeeper Sophonwit Rakyath and substitute Thirapak Prueangna were banned from participating in the Thai national team for six months.
Omani referee Kassem Matar Al-Hatmi issued a total of seven red cards in the final on May 16. Three Thai U22 players and two coaching staff members were shown red cards, while one Indonesian U22 player was sent off and another coaching staff member was also shown a red card.
The 7 red cards and 11 yellow cards in the final match were also a record for the number of cards in a men's football final since the regional sports festival was named SEA Games and had an age limit of U22 or U23.
