The agreement allows the two parties to cross-sell network infrastructure and consumer devices, as well as global access to each other's portfolio of standardized, licensed technologies.
Huawei and Ericsson have just signed an agreement to use each other's patents
“We are delighted to have reached a long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement with Ericsson,” said Alan Fan, Huawei’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer. “As strong contributors to the Standard Essential Patents (SEP) portfolio for the mobile telecommunications industry, Huawei and Ericsson both recognise the value of each other’s intellectual property. This collaboration will help build a stronger patent environment and demonstrate the commitment of both partners to promoting respect for and proper protection of intellectual property rights.”
Over the past 20 years, Huawei has been a mainstream ICT standards provider, covering the fields of cellular technology, Wi-Fi, and multimedia data encryption. In 2022, Huawei topped the European Patent Office's patent filing rankings with 4,504 applications.
As both the owner and implementer of standard essential patents (SEPs), Huawei seeks to strike a balance in licensing. Through the agreement, Huawei and Ericsson will both grant and receive access to each other’s key technologies.
"This agreement is also the result of intensive negotiations to ensure that the interests of patent owners and patent applicants are served fairly," said Alan Fan.
