(GLO)- On the morning of June 28, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province held a conference to review the local defense and military work in the first 6 months of the year and deploy tasks for the last 6 months of 2023. Attending the conference were member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council Truong Van Dat and leaders of departments, branches, localities and units.
Reporting at the conference, Colonel Le Kim Giau - Member of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee, Commander of the Provincial Military Command - said: In the first 6 months of 2023, under the direct leadership of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee, the Provincial People's Committee directed sectors and localities to well implement local defense and military tasks, contributing to consolidating defense potential, maintaining political security, social order and safety, creating favorable conditions for socio-economic development.
The work of building defense potentials in the provincial defense area, improving the overall quality and combat strength of the armed forces is focused on. The provincial armed forces always strictly maintain combat readiness at all levels, ensuring absolute safety for political events of the country and the province.

Localities and units have strengthened coordination in patrolling, controlling, preventing and combating border crossings, infiltration, preventing, combating, and effectively stopping the sabotage activities of FULRO reactionaries and "Dega Protestants". Implementing Directive No. 12/CT-QK dated February 21, 2023 of the Commander of Military Region 5 on the Gia Lai province defense zone exercise in 2023, Directive No. 10-CT/TU dated January 17, 2023 of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee on defense zone and civil defense exercises at the provincial and district levels in 2023, the Provincial People's Committee has directed the Provincial Military Command, the Provincial Police, and the Provincial Border Guard Command to coordinate with departments and branches to do a good job of preparing and organizing the exercise, which was evaluated as having good results by Military Region 5.
Implementing the Law on Military Service in 2015, the Provincial People's Committee directed the Military Service Councils of localities to perform well the selection and call-up of 2,654 citizens to join the army, reaching 100% of the target; assigning targets to localities and units to build militia and self-defense forces in accordance with regulations, reaching a rate of 1.3% compared to the population. Localities also performed well the arrangement and appointment of 506/520 officers of the Commune-level Military Command (reaching 97.3%).
The Provincial People's Committee also directed the National Defense and Security Education Council, the Provincial Military Command, the Provincial Police, the Provincial Border Guard Command, departments, branches, and localities to review and send 1,143 people for training and updating knowledge of national defense and security, reaching 100% of the target; organized 104 training classes for cadres with 7,596 people; the Provincial Military Command organized 7 training classes with 752 people; trained 478 new soldiers; organized militia and self-defense training at 153 bases with 5,247 people...
In addition, Party building work in the provincial armed forces was well implemented with 205 new party members admitted; the rate of party members in the militia and self-defense force reached 29.54% (an increase of 1.21% over the same period in 2022); the rate of party members in the reserve force reached 13.4%.

In addition to assessing the results achieved, the conference also frankly acknowledged the shortcomings and limitations in the implementation of local defense and military tasks in the past time, such as: coordination between functional agencies to resolve problems in the management and use of defense land is still slow; some contents of preparation and implementation of the task of performing defense area drills at the district level are still of limited quality; the work of grasping, orienting, and resolving the ideology of some Party committees and units is not very effective; some localities have assigned troops with the health rate of type 1 and type 2 that has not met the set target; the rate of military professionalism in reserve mobilization units in some units is still low; some districts and towns have not completed the appointment and consolidation of the Commune-level Military Command...
Concluding the conference, Colonel Le Kim Giau suggested that localities need to do a better job of managing national defense land. Planning training grounds and district military command headquarters is still difficult, many units are far from the center, so localities need to pay attention to this issue. At the same time, localities need to prepare well for the work of planning cadres for the next term. The issue of building and repairing the working house of the commune military command needs to continue to be promoted; strictly manage support tools and uniforms for duty; promote training in national defense and security knowledge. Complete the B plans of departments and branches. From now until the end of the year, leaders of departments, branches and localities are requested to improve the limitations, strive to have no unit that fails to complete its tasks by the end of the year.
