Later that night, the Houthis posted a video on social media that they said showed them setting the Sounion tanker on fire. Frame-by-frame analysis showed three simultaneous explosions on the deck of the ship, suggesting the attack was carried out with pre-detonated explosives, rather than a missile or drone.

The Houthis said they attacked the Sounion tanker as part of a 10-month campaign against commercial shipping supporting Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The Houthis first damaged the tanker on August 22 with repeated attacks that caused a fire and loss of engine power. A European warship later rescued the 25 Filipino and Russian crew, along with four private security personnel. They were taken to nearby Djibouti by a French frigate.
The unmanned ship was anchored between Yemen and Eritrea, a maritime security source said on August 23.
The EU's Red Sea naval mission Aspides said the tanker Sounion was carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil and warned the fire posed a "maritime and environmental hazard".
The Sounion is the third ship operated by Athens-based Delta Tankers to be attacked by the Houthis this month.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the force attacked the tanker partly because it had violated a ban on “entering occupied Palestinian ports”.
