At this time, at Choac dam in Yen Vien hamlet, some areas in Tien Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district have dried up, buffaloes and cows have come out to the middle of the lake to graze. Mr. Phan Van Vu - Chairman of Tien Thanh commune People's Committee said: Choac dam in Yen Vien hamlet irrigates over 30 hectares of rice, currently the water source here only has over 30% of its capacity.

Faced with the risk of water shortage, from the beginning of the year, the commune directed the Yen Vien reservoir management force to implement reasonable irrigation, saving irrigation water for the "stressful" stage of rice heading and flowering. Up to now, this reservoir has been watering every 10 days for 4-5 days.

Tien Thanh commune has 8 reservoirs, providing irrigation water for over 270 hectares of spring rice, however, the water source of the reservoirs is very difficult. 3 reservoirs are being upgraded, the remaining 5 reservoirs only have 30-45% water source. The reason is that in the past year, there was little rain in this area, so the water source flowing into the reservoirs is limited. To cope with the above difficulties, in addition to using water economically, during the hot season, the commune has a plan to set up field pumping stations in streams and dead-end rivers to pump additional water for the rice area at the end of the canal.

Mr. Le Van Hong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Thanh district said: This spring crop, Yen Thanh planted over 12,800 hectares of rice, of which the reservoir area is over 3,500 hectares. The district has nearly 254 reservoirs, currently most of the reservoirs managed by the commune only reach water levels of 35-50% of capacity, basically ensuring the spring rice area.

However, during the prolonged hot weather, some rice fields in the reservoir area will be at risk of water shortage. Therefore, the district has directed communes and irrigation management units to focus on water resource management, prevent loss and ensure water resources for spring rice irrigation. At this time, Yen Thanh district is also speeding up the upgrading of 6 reservoirs in the area, completing them soon to store water for the upcoming summer-autumn crop.

Also in the same situation, Tan Ky district currently has many reservoirs with decreasing water levels. A representative of Tan Ky Irrigation Company Limited said: The unit manages 7 reservoirs in the area, irrigating 1,200 hectares of rice, up to now 5/7 reservoirs have water levels only reaching 35-50%. Of which, Truong Tho reservoir in Nghia Dung commune, Tan Ky district currently has only over 35% of its water capacity, Khe Dua reservoir in Nghia Phuc commune has 40% of its water capacity.

To ensure water for spring rice irrigation, the unit has regulated and compressed water reasonably, and implemented irrigation according to the principle of "watering later when near, watering first when far". Plans have been made to place field pumps in some areas of streams, streams, and dead-end rivers, pumping water back up to "save" rice during the hot season.

According to information from the Irrigation Department, Nghe An has 1,061 reservoirs, up to this point, 126 reservoirs have reached less than 50% of their capacity, of which 108 reservoirs are managed by local authorities and 18 reservoirs are managed by irrigation companies.

According to forecasts, some areas of the dam reservoir will face difficulties during the rice panicle-blossoming stage. In the face of this situation, to proactively prevent and combat drought, Nghe An Irrigation Department has recommended that localities need to have drought prevention plans for each area, strictly manage water resources, prevent leakage and water loss from reservoirs. Have a specific plan to arrange irrigation schedules such as rotating irrigation, saving water; watering spring rice and saving for the summer-autumn crop.

Localities need to focus on dredging canals, embankments, and plot banks; reinforcing dams, pumping, inspecting, repairing, and renovating works. It is necessary to speed up the construction of reservoirs and irrigation works that are being upgraded in the province to store water in time for the upcoming summer-autumn crop.
