On the afternoon of July 5 in Hanoi, the Vietnam Publishing Association held a press conference to inform about the plan to organize the 5th Congress, term 2023-2028. Accordingly, the congress will take place on July 12 at La Thanh Hotel (Hanoi) with the participation of nearly 250 official delegates.
Sharing at the event, Mr. Nguyen Nguyen - Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution, Ministry of Information and Communications, Vice President of the Vietnam Publishing Association - said that the Congress will have the participation of 250 official delegates and about 100 guests who are leaders of the Party, State, representatives of ministries, departments, central and local branches.
"This congress will evaluate the activities of the past term, set out directions and tasks, and elect positions for the next term.
In recent times, the Publishing Association has completed 5 professional committees, developed operating regulations, and coordinated with the Ministry of Information and Communications to successfully organize the National Book Awards. Nguyen Van Binh Book Street, Ho Chi Minh City, was organized.
In addition, the Association has completed its assigned tasks and made positive contributions to the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th National Awards for External Information; Awards for composing and promoting literary, artistic, and journalistic works on the theme of Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style in the 2016-2017; 2018-2020, and 2021-2023 periods," Mr. Nguyen informed.
According to Mr. Nguyen, with the efforts of the Vietnam Publishing Association, over the past 20 years, the Association has had achievements and contributions to the development of reading culture. As of the end of May 2023, the Association has 187 members, including 167 organizational members who are publishers and distribution establishments nationwide with the number of actual participants of over 11,000 people and 20 individual members.
When asked: Recently, pirated books have been widely sold openly online without being thoroughly handled. So in the future, what measures will the Publishing Association take to limit this?
Mr. Nguyen Nguyen said: "As cyberspace develops, copyright protection needs to be paid attention to. We will implement many synchronous solutions such as perfecting sanctions and regulations to strengthen copyright protection.
The Association will develop regulations to establish a Copyright Protection Center, with the hope of being able to represent authors to protect their rights. We also promote legal awareness to readers to improve their understanding of books."
Mr. Hoang Vinh Bao - Chairman of the Vietnam Publishing Association - said that in the coming term, the Association will focus on rejuvenating the workforce so that the publishing industry can develop further. Young personnel will grasp information quickly and be dynamic. The Association will expand the membership, not only to book and publishing personnel but also to technology enterprises to better apply digital transformation in the publishing industry.
Regarding the translation of famous works by domestic writers such as Bao Ninh, Nguyen Huy Thiep, etc. abroad, a representative of the Vietnam Publishing Association said that in the coming time, this unit will focus on bringing Vietnamese works abroad. In addition, the Publishing Association will have connections with the Writers Association to better communicate about books so that international readers will know about the outstanding works of writers and authors in Vietnam.
