Patient VVH (1985, Hai Phong) had a serious accident when his right hand was caught in a meat grinder while working. The cause was determined to be that the patient was wearing gloves when putting meat into the machine, causing the gloves to be caught in the machine and pull the patient's hand along with it.
The accident occurred at around 7:00 a.m. on October 11, 2024, and the patient was then taken to Vinh Bao International Hospital, Hai Phong for first aid. Due to severe injuries to the hand, the patient was transferred to the 108 Military Central Hospital 4 hours after the accident for surgery.
Upon admission, doctors noted that the patient's right hand was stuck in a meat grinder and had to remove part of the machine to free the hand.
Master, Doctor Nguyen Ba Minh and the surgical team performed the surgery to try to retain as much length as possible of the crushed limb. The surgery encountered many difficulties because the hand was too deeply entangled in the machine, especially the fingers of the right hand.
Despite many difficulties, the doctors managed to preserve the patient's thumb and part of the little finger. The patient's right hand is dominant, and losing part of the fingers will greatly affect his daily activities and work in the future.
After surgery, the patient will need to undergo rehabilitation to improve the ability to use his hand. Although he has not fully recovered, thanks to the efforts of the doctors, the most important part of his limb, the thumb, has been preserved, helping the patient maintain some of his gripping function.
Master, Doctor Nguyen Ba Minh emphasized that the use of dangerous machinery in the workplace must be done with extreme caution. Accidents caused by machinery such as meat grinders, lawn mowers or blenders often cause serious injuries, even leading to loss of limbs.
In the event of an accident, timely first aid and transfer of the patient to a specialized medical facility is essential to increase the chances of saving the limb.
