Nowadays, with the desire to serve their jobs well, many people choose to study for a master's or doctorate degree right after graduating from university.

To know whether you can continue your studies for a PhD after graduating from university, let's find out in the article below.

Conditions for bachelors to study directly for doctorate

Clause 1, Article 7 of the Regulations on doctoral degree enrollment and training issued together with Circular 18/2021/TT-BGDDT stipulates in detail the subjects and conditions for doctoral degree enrollment.

Specifically, candidates for doctoral research must meet the conditions of having graduated with a master's degree or a university degree with honors or higher in a relevant field, or graduated with a level equivalent to level 7 according to the Vietnamese National Qualifications Framework in a number of specific specialized training fields suitable for doctoral training.

Candidates must meet the entry requirements according to the training program standards issued by the Ministry of Education and Training and of the doctoral training program they are applying for, have a draft research outline and a planned study and research plan for the entire course.

Future PhD students need to have research experience, demonstrated through a master's thesis of a research-oriented training program; or published scientific articles and reports; or have worked for 02 years (24 months) or more as a lecturer or researcher at training institutions, scientific and technological organizations.

Therefore, university graduates with honors or higher in a relevant field can study for a doctorate without having to study for a master's degree.

Bachelors who study directly for a doctorate must also meet the following foreign language proficiency requirements: A university degree or higher issued by a foreign training institution, a branch of a foreign training institution in Vietnam, or a Vietnamese training institution to full-time students in a foreign language; a university degree in foreign language issued by a Vietnamese training institution;

Or learners must have international foreign language certificates equivalent to level 4 (according to the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework for Vietnam) announced by the Ministry of Education and Training.

If a foreigner registers for a PhD in Vietnamese, he/she must have a Vietnamese certificate of at least level 4 or higher according to the Vietnamese Proficiency Framework.

In addition to the above conditions, depending on the characteristics of each field, training major and specific training program of the training institution, other conditions may be prescribed for candidates.

PhD training time

Clause 1, Clause 3, Article 3 of the Regulations on doctoral training and enrollment issued together with Circular 18/2021/TT-BGDDT stipulates the time and form of doctoral training as follows:

The standard training period for a doctoral degree is from 3 years (36 months) to 4 years (48 months) as determined by the training institution, ensuring that most doctoral students complete the training program within this period. Each doctoral student has a full-time study and research plan within the approved standard training time frame attached to the doctoral student recognition decision.

Doctoral training is conducted in a formal manner; doctoral students must spend enough time studying and researching at the training institution according to the approved plan; in which, when registering for 30 credits/academic year, it is determined to be full-time.

PhD Admission Methods

Currently, doctoral degree enrollment is organized once or several times a year, as decided by the university training institutions. However, those institutions must meet the conditions to ensure the quality of doctoral training according to current regulations.

Admission methods include entrance exams, admission selection, or a combination of entrance exams and admission selection as decided by the training institution to ensure transparent, fair, objective, and honest assessment of the knowledge and capacity of candidates.

In addition, training institutions are also allowed to organize online enrollment when meeting the same quality assurance conditions as for direct enrollment.

Therefore, before registering for the entrance exam or doctoral degree, you need to carefully research all the information when preparing your application to avoid unwanted errors. Currently, most universities across the country offer doctoral degrees, depending on your own conditions to choose the appropriate school to study.
