In nearly 3 weeks, 9th grade students in Ho Chi Minh City will enter the 10th grade public high school entrance exam. At this time, students are highly focused on "sprinting" exam preparation with a tight study schedule, causing many parents to worry.
Having a 9th grader at a secondary school in Phu Nhuan district, Ms. Hong Trang said that on weekday mornings, her child goes to school until 11am, then goes to the center to study until 5pm at 1pm, then goes home to rest until 7pm to study at the teacher's house. After hours of "running around" to review for exams, her child stays up late to study. Witnessing that, she also loses her appetite and sleep.

"My child aims to get into a top high school, so he is very conscious of his studies. I also consulted him about whether extra classes at the center are necessary, but I never forced him. But he is very determined to secure a place in the school he wants," said Ms. Trang.
Mr. Van Manh, whose child is in grade 9 in District 12, said that his child set a goal of taking the entrance exam for grade 10 of the specialized Math program at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, so his child's study schedule has been quite tight since the beginning of the year. Currently, Mr. Manh's child's exam preparation schedule is full from Monday to Sunday.
During this period, in addition to studying at home, the male student also went to review centers, focusing on solving many types of exercises, especially Math. According to him, solving many exercises helps consolidate knowledge and familiarize himself with new types. Hopefully, with those efforts, he will achieve his goals.
Mr. Cao Duc Khoa, principal of Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School (District 1) said that 9th grade students study at school in the morning and review at home in the afternoon. Teachers will review basic knowledge, build it to be suitable, focusing on the types of questions as announced by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.
In Math, teachers will focus on reviewing practical problems, calculating interest rates, discount rates, calculating ratios, similar triangles...
In Literature, teachers will support students in solving practical problems in life. Students do open-ended questions that focus on the content of life that the press reports so that they can develop and prepare good materials for the test.
In English, students review grammar, vocabulary and solve basic lessons learned throughout the 9th grade program.
"This year, the school has 169 grade 9 students taking the public grade 10 exam. The review program starts in mid-May, completing the main curriculum and spending time in parallel to review knowledge. The review period is expected to end on May 31," said Mr. Khoa.
Not only 9th graders, 12th graders in Ho Chi Minh City have started to speed up to prepare for the 2023 high school graduation exam in July. Nguyen Thanh Hoang, a 12A11 student at Tran Quang Khai High School (District 11) said he has completed the second semester exam. He has also finished reviewing the basic theories in the textbooks and the outlines given by the teachers. Hoang is practicing each topic and then will focus on solving the questions.
“I review at school in the morning and at home in the afternoon. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, I go to extra Math classes and on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings, I go to extra Physics classes. My wish is to get into Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, so I am trying my best to achieve the highest results in the upcoming exam," Thanh Hoang said.
At this time, many high schools have planned to review for grade 12 students, preparing for the 2023 high school graduation exam on June 28-30. According to Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), the school has 630 grade 12 students taking the high school graduation exam this year.
The school will meet with the parent-teacher association to approve the review plan for the high school graduation exam. The review period is 3 weeks from May 30 to June 21. In addition to the review periods for the exam subjects, the school will also add 3 more periods for flag salute, reading, and sports activities.
Grade 12 students of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1) review from May 15 to June 24.
"During the review process, teachers focus on reviewing knowledge, understanding and applying it. At the same time, they guide students on how to practice at home. They develop active teaching methods that can be combined with online teaching via the LMS system. They create a light and comfortable atmosphere for students to easily absorb it," Mr. Phu shared.
At Tran Quang Khai High School (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City), the review period for the high school graduation exam for 12th graders takes place from May 15 to June 24. Mr. Nguyen Tan Tai, the school's principal, shared that in the first week, the school organized a general review for 740 12th graders, then classified each group to have a suitable review method. The review schedule is every morning from Monday to Friday.
According to Mr. Tai, after the second semester test, if any student's results are not good, the teacher will separate them to have a separate review schedule. First, these students will review the general basic knowledge in class, then they will take the test. From the test, the teacher will separate the students into groups.
"If students are still weak, teachers will continue to tutor them in the afternoons, and this review is free. As for good students, the school will start guiding them to do test questions and teach more advanced sections ," Mr. Tai informed.
