Students change plans, 'find a way out' before the possibility of tightening admissions

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/12/2024

Raising the entrance threshold for education and health sectors and tightening regulations on admission based on academic records are some of the new regulations in the draft of the Ministry of Education and Training that have caused many students to change their plans.

The Ministry of Education and Training has recently announced a draft circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of the regulations on university and college admissions for preschool education (referred to as university admission regulations). In particular, the Ministry plans to raise requirements or tighten many regulations related to early admission, admission based on academic records and other methods other than high school graduation exam scores.

CHANGE OR CONSIDER YOUR WISHES

Ly Bao Viet, a student at Quynh Luu 4 High School (Nghe An), said he intends to take the exam to study pedagogy next year. However, because he is afraid of not being able to meet the new regulations and having difficulty competing with high school graduation exam scores because "last year, each subject required nearly 10 points to pass", the male student has changed direction and chosen to take the exam to military schools. "Military schools are also "hot", but because the quota is high, it may be easier to pass," Viet shared.

"Overall, I think the new regulations are quite fair because students in rural areas will not have as good conditions as students in the city to review for the competency assessment exams (AAP). Currently, I am trying to focus more on studying in grade 12, especially the subjects in my group that I am taking the exam for: math, literature, physics and English because I am "betting" all my hopes on the high school graduation exam," Viet said.

Le Truong Nhat Lam, a student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), who wants to enter Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, shared that he only got good marks in grades 10 and 11, so he is currently under pressure to maintain his achievements in grade 12. "I have registered for an advanced practice course and reduced extracurricular activities to optimize my review time," Lam said.

Worried about not achieving good results in grade 12, Nhat Lam also started to research other majors and prepare a backup plan. "I am considering the biotechnology major at the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University). If anything changes, I will change direction and not pursue medicine anymore," Lam confided.

The concern of many students comes from the Ministry of Education and Training wanting to raise the entrance standards for health and education, when requiring students who want to apply to have academic results in 3 years of high school ranked good or higher or a high school graduation score of 8 or higher. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Training currently only stipulates considering academic results in grade 12 with good academic performance or higher or a high school graduation score of 8 or higher.

WORRY ABOUT ADMISSION BY HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

The new draft of the Ministry of Education and Training also raises the requirements for the admission method based on academic records when it stipulates that universities must use the academic results of the entire 12th grade year of students. In fact, in previous years, many schools only used the academic results of some semesters in all 3 years of study, not using the second semester score of the 12th grade year. The Ministry of Education and Training also tightened the early admission quota, limiting the maximum to 20%, and at the same time required the admission score to not be lower than the standard score of the admission round according to the general plan of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Intending to consider his transcripts to study marketing at Ton Duc Thang University, Luong Nguyen Thien An, a student at Nguyen Huu Tho High School (HCMC), said he had to adjust his study plan because previously the school only considered the results of 5 semesters: grades 10, 11, and semester 1 of grade 12. "I have registered to study Korean next semester because I intend to study abroad later, but with the new regulations, I will temporarily put it aside to "plow" through my transcripts until the end of grade 12," the male student said.

On the other hand, the regulation requiring early admission scores not to be lower than the general admission score has made Le Quynh Anh, a student at Trung Vuong High School (HCMC), worried, because the school she wants to attend has a "very high" admission score.

"I plan to take the IELTS exam with a target score of 7.0, but given the current situation, I may have to raise my target to 7.5 to increase my chances. This puts me under a lot of pressure because I have to both prepare for the IELTS exam and ensure my academic performance in class to maintain a good grade point average," said the female student who wants to apply to the Foreign Trade University using a combination of high school transcripts and foreign language certificates.

Also hoping to enter this university, Le Mai Phuong, a student at Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (HCMC), said she chose to apply for admission based on IELTS and SAT (US university entrance exam). However, with the new regulations, Phuong admitted that she was not confident about her ability to pass the early admission exam. "Therefore, I am preparing to retake the SAT to get a more competitive result and find a way out by preparing for the National University of HCMC's National High School Entrance Exam and the high school graduation exam," the female student said.

WHAT SHOULD FINAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PAY ATTENTION TO?

Mr. Dang Duy Hung, manager of the Lasan - Helius Education exam preparation system (HCMC), advised students not to "bet" everything on any exam this year, whether it is the National High School Graduation Exam or the High School Graduation Exam. What needs to be done is to spread out the opportunities in all, "try your best until the last exam", because the knowledge learned can be applied in any exam and each exam is an opportunity, according to the male teacher.

Mr. Han Thien Tan, a tutor in math, physics, and chemistry in Ho Chi Minh City, said the new regulations have a significant impact on average and good students, "because many times they are only good at the subjects they like, while the remaining subjects do not meet the required score for good, leading to lost opportunities."

This year, the draft university admission regulations tighten regulations on admission based on academic records and early admission.

"In general, the new regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training only tighten the entrance requirements of universities to create fairness in enrollment, so students who have studied and oriented from the beginning do not need to worry about anything," Mr. Tan emphasized.

Master Bui Van Cong, an online teacher of the National High School Exam in Ho Chi Minh City, advised students to carefully review or wait for the admission plan of the university they want to apply to instead of worrying about information online, and to spend more time reviewing school subjects. Currently, students in Mr. Cong's classes continue to review for the National High School Exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University as usual, not affected by the new regulations in the draft, and this process has started since May.

"In addition, you should also focus more on domestic exams, such as the National High School Graduation Exam or the High School Graduation Exam, instead of focusing on admission methods using foreign certificates or transcripts," Mr. Cong expressed his opinion in the context that more and more units are participating in organizing or using the results of domestic National High School Graduation Exams to admit students to their schools.

Relief from understanding the draft regulations correctly

Before the news that the Ministry of Education and Training planned to tighten early admission, many students expressed confusion and anxiety. For example, Nguyen Hoang Phuc, a student at Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (HCMC), said he planned to use the results of the National University of HCMC's National High School Exam to apply for admission to the finance major at the HCMC University of Economics. "But I'm afraid that tightening early admission to 20% will cause the standard score to skyrocket, and I have no chance of being admitted using this method," the male student shared.

However, in a recent conversation with Thanh Nien , Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), explained that early admission is the time when schools consider admission before the high school graduation exam. This is a concept used to differentiate in terms of time from the admission period according to the general plan of the Ministry of Education and Training, meaning that candidates are not limited in admission methods such as considering academic records, considering GRE scores, assessing thinking...

Hearing this news, Hoang Phuc felt relieved. "However, I still feel pressured because this is the first year of taking the exam according to the 2018 General Education Program with many innovations," Phuc said.

Sharing the same sentiment, Le Duc Quoc Bao, a student at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted (HCMC), said he will try to improve his grades in class to increase his competitiveness, despite having achieved 8.0 IELTS and 1,510 SAT. "I still hope to be admitted early," the male student shared.
