Going to school peacefully every day, not being tormented by a terrible disease, is a joy for Ngo Thi Yen Nhi (right) - Photo: D.KHOI
Her family lives in Hamlet 7, Hoa Hiep Commune, Tam Binh District (Vinh Long). Yen Nhi is in class 12B3 at Tran Dai Nghia High School.
The girl born in 2006 was born with a kind face that everyone thought would bring her a bright and happy future. But perhaps life was a bit cruel to her.
The terrible disease
When Nhi was 9 years old, her body suddenly broke out in red rashes and her limbs swelled. Her family tried to take her to major hospitals for examination.
The news that Yen Nhi had kidney complications due to lupus erythematosus was like a thunderbolt to the whole family, causing her health to gradually decline and then become more and more serious. Every month, Nhi was taken for check-ups to promptly monitor and treat the complications caused by this disease.
Nhi's mother could not bear the hardships of life and left her family to find new happiness. Family life became even more difficult when Nhi's father had to shoulder the household chores and take care of his daughter alone. It became even more difficult when Nhi's illness became more serious and she had to be hospitalized for observation.
Yen Nhi has a younger sister who is in 9th grade. The three of them are staying in the house of their aunt.
Being a single father raising children is already hard enough, and Nhi's illness often has complications so her father cannot go out to work and can only rely on raising animals at home to support his two daughters' education and pay for Nhi's medical treatment.
With such a small and difficult income, Nhi still has to go to the hospital every month, each time costing about 4.5 million VND.
Learn to overcome fate, give wings to your dreams
Having suffered from this terrible disease for nearly 9 years, Yen Nhi has an incredibly strong will despite the pain and fatigue she has to endure.
Every morning, when her friends go to school smiling, Nhi also goes to class with the pain and fatigue of her illness.
Nhi shared that her biggest fear was whether she would be healthy enough to study fully today, and whether there would be any complications that would force her to stop studying halfway.
There were days when Nhi was sitting in class but her illness suddenly got worse, she couldn't absorb anything and had to ask to go home to rest. This situation happened quite often.
Having just finished the second semester exam of grade 12, Yen Nhi had to be hospitalized at Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC) due to complications and worsening of her illness. Her health seemed to be drained day by day.
After being allowed to go home after a few days of treatment, Nhi immediately returned to class to study for the graduation exam with her friends. She is always diligent when her health allows, has a high sense of responsibility and tries to complete the homework assigned by her teachers as completely as possible.
In her final year of high school, Nhi achieved an average score of 7.6 and was classified as a good student with good conduct.
"Even though circumstances prevent me from going to school regularly, I always try my best to concentrate on listening to my teachers and absorb knowledge whenever I feel better. I want to continue going to school and fulfill my dreams," Nhi confided.
Admiring her diligence, resilience in fighting the disease, and making every effort to overcome her own challenges is the biggest reason why I want to share Ngo Thi Yen Nhi's story with the Wings of Dreams scholarship program.
I hope Nhi will be supported to be a source of motivation to help her confidently move forward, fight and overcome her fate, and fulfill her dream of going to school. I hope her story of perseverance will touch the compassion of many people, because she has tried very hard on her life journey.
