Do Thi Lan Anh was born in 1997 in Ho Chi Minh City. When she was only 1 year old, the beauty followed her family to Poland and then moved to the US when she was 6 years old. She graduated with a degree in business administration from California State University - Fullerton (USA). The beauty queen can speak 4 languages: Vietnamese, English, Spanish, Korean; has a specialty in contemporary dance and acting. The beauty started a cosmetics company at the age of 24 but temporarily stopped her business when she planned to return to Vietnam to live. In October 2023, Lan Anh was crowned Miss Earth Vietnam 2023 , impressing with her attractive appearance, sharp thinking and fluent English. She is preparing to participate in Miss Earth 2023 taking place in Vietnam from the end of November.

I always want to be myself
Returning to Vietnam after 20 years living in the US, Lan Anh decided to compete in a beauty pageant and was crowned Miss Earth Vietnam 2023.

* Hello Lan Anh! Why did you decide to return to Vietnam and start over while you were in the US?
- Miss Lan Anh: For me, opportunities in life must be created by myself. Returning to Vietnam is also an opportunity from which I can open new doors for myself. I think I will always develop and learn from the surroundings. My grandparents also taught me: "Traveling a day, learning a basket of wisdom". Experience and life experience will be a solid foundation for me in the future.
My parents were also very worried at that time because I was a girl, and they would not be able to live nearby to take care of me like before. They were also sad and told me to think again to make the most reasonable decision.
* When you first returned to Vietnam, did you intend to compete in a beauty pageant?
- Because I live in the US, I don't have the time or experience like my peers in Vietnam. When I returned, I wanted to learn about Vietnam's culture, traditions, and economy first, so I didn't intend to compete. After that, I decided that I needed to participate in a project or activity that could help me quickly integrate into the culture and everything here and learn faster. At that time, I was looking for opportunities. Then my family and friends shared with me information about Miss Earth Vietnam 2023, and advised me to try competing in a beauty pageant. Actually, people talked a lot about this issue in the past, but I never thought I would participate in the beauty industry. At first, everything was just an idea in my head.
* How did Lan Anh's family react when she won the prize?
- When I went to the competition, my parents also wanted to return to Vietnam to watch me compete. But I told them that they had work and family there, and that I went to the competition without knowing the results, so everyone could watch via livestream. After seeing their daughter win on the screen, my parents called me immediately, but I was on stage and couldn't hear them. My parents were very happy, excited and proud of me.
The 26-year-old beauty shared that life after the coronation has many new things, but she always wants to be herself.

* How has your life changed after winning the beauty queen title?
- My life after becoming Miss Lan Anh compared to the previous Lan Anh has many new things, many changes. I am still not used to the schedule of implementing environmental and community projects as well as training to prepare for Miss Earth 2023. This is my first time entering the beauty industry, so there are still many things that I feel confused about. Luckily, I received a lot of support from my family, the audience, especially my friends on major beauty forums in Vietnam. That is a huge motivation to help me make more efforts and determination to show myself well at Miss Earth 2023.
* Regarding personal style, do you have to give up things you used to do to maintain your image as a public figure?
- I always want to be myself, the most genuine person, so now I don't have to change much when standing in front of people. Maybe I can improve my communication style and presentation style in front of the audience. I try to make sure that everyone can understand my ideas and thoughts, but my personality remains the same.

* What does Lan Anh do with the prize money for the beauty queen title?
- After being crowned Miss Earth Vietnam, I want to use all my prize money to build a passionate environmental project. I am working with the management company to learn more about the environment in Vietnam so that I can create a project that helps the community and nature in the most effective way.
* Every year, Vietnam has more than a dozen beauty queens crowned, but not all of them leave their own mark and are accepted and loved by the public. Do you feel pressured about a lackluster tenure that leaves no mark?
- I always want to be the best version of myself. During my term, I hope to do my best to gain knowledge, take action and spread the message of environmental protection. I want to convey the most positive things, not try to influence the most people.

* After many years of returning home, did you experience culture shock and difficulties in Vietnam?
- Due to language limitations, I did not fully understand all the sayings and jokes of some young people today. At that time, I was confused and had to ask my friends to explain. By the time they finished explaining, the saying was no longer funny. But at that time, I gradually understood and learned more ways to use language, thereby communicating with people more easily.
* Lan Anh participated in many events after being crowned, so what do you think about Vietnamese showbiz and do you want to work in this environment?
- Before, I was not exposed to showbiz so there were many new things that excited me. I have never been to events with many talented guests in the art field. I find that in showbiz I can learn a lot about behavior, communication and thinking. If I follow the business path, the conversations will only be about business, but in art, everyone has their own way of thinking and color, so I really like that.

* After being crowned, what have you prepared to enter the upcoming race for the Miss Earth crown?
- I spent a lot of time practicing my communication and behavioral skills, improving my knowledge about the environment, issues and questions that people were interested in, and investing in the Eco project to have the best preparation for the contest. In addition, I also practiced my catwalk and performance skills. As for English, I am lucky to have good English thanks to living and studying in the US. I am confident that I will welcome and promote the beauty of Vietnamese culture, country and people to international contestants as well as perform well in the presentation and behavioral rounds at Miss Earth 2023.
* Normally, a girl wearing a Vietnamese sash at an international beauty pageant, in addition to competing, is also considered a cultural ambassador of her homeland, contributing to promoting Vietnamese culture, country and people to international friends. But Lan Anh has lived abroad for too long and does not fully understand Vietnamese culture, so what will you convey to them?
- In America, my mother still shows me, shares with me and teaches me interesting things about Vietnamese culture. For example, my mother often shows me how to prepare for holidays according to traditional customs. My mother is a very traditional Vietnamese woman and always cooks Vietnamese dishes at home for me, never Western dishes. In addition, I also often talk to relatives, aunts, uncles, Vietnamese grandparents, and family in Vietnam. Thanks to the luck of my mother passing on the good cultural features of Vietnam, I gradually learned a lot about my homeland and realized that even though I have lived in America for many years, I am still a Vietnamese girl. I always remember that and carry that thought with me even though I live abroad.
As for communicating in Vietnamese, it is not easy because besides my family, the environment around me, people mainly communicate in English. I always try to improve my Vietnamese so that you can see my efforts. When I return to Vietnam, I still have family and relatives here, my aunts and uncles also help me a lot to integrate into my homeland's culture.
Lan Anh is passionate about environmental activities and wants to use the bonus to build a passionate project.

* What worries you most when you are in Vietnam?
- What I am most concerned about is language. I am limited in my language and wish to meet more people so that I can speak Vietnamese more, improve my communication skills, and use Vietnamese more. I also miss my parents and family very much because this is the first time I have been away from home for such a long time and have to adapt to a new life.
* It is known that Lan Anh graduated with a degree in business administration and also started a business. So after your term ends, do you plan to pursue a business career or have any other plans?
- After my term, I still want to convey and pursue environmental projects for as long as possible, that is my goal and I really want to complete that mission. Even after my term ends, I still want to participate in environmental and ecological activities and projects not only in Vietnam but also abroad. Of course, after that, I also want to have a stable career that can bring in a good income to take care of myself. I think I will try many things and doing business is one of them.
