According to coach Philippe Troussier, bringing in quality overseas Vietnamese players to contribute is one of the measures to help improve the strength of the national teams. The French coach said he is looking for players of Vietnamese origin abroad.
"According to the list provided by scouts, there are 20 players of Vietnamese origin playing in Korea, Japan, Russia, France, Bulgaria, Czech Republic,... We are trying to approach overseas Vietnamese players," said the head coach of the Vietnam national team.
"I used to work in Africa. They have achieved quite a lot of success in the past. Many of their players are not self-trained but brought from Europe. Those players are constantly playing in a top football environment. That is why the strength of African teams is rapidly improving. In the Southeast Asian region, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia also do this thoroughly, but Vietnam does not have many players like that."
Coach Troussier
During the June training session, Coach Troussier called up Vietnamese-American player Nguyen An Khanh to join the Vietnam U23 team. This is a rare case of a player trained and playing abroad playing for the Vietnam youth team.
"An Khanh has Vietnamese nationality and passport. Therefore, I only have to talk to his parents and him personally to make the decision to call him up," said coach Troussier.
Player Nguyen An Khanh is a special case in the U23 Vietnam training camp. An Khanh was born in the Czech Republic, plays for SK Sigma Olomouc and is a member of the U18 Czech Republic. Coach Troussier and his assistants searched for and proposed this case to the Vietnam Football Federation.
Coach Troussier mentioned the usefulness of overseas Vietnamese players, but he still emphasized the role of the professional club-level tournament system in enhancing the strength of the Vietnamese national team.
"To improve the strength of the Vietnamese team, training alone is not enough. The first method needed is the V-League system, the First Division needs to be complete, continuous and have more matches, possibly extending to 40, 50 matches per season. Whether the Vietnamese team is successful or not depends on the clubs," said coach Troussier.
