On the afternoon of July 26, Coach Mai Duc Chung shared some notable things before the match with the Portuguese women's team in the second match of Group E of the 2023 World Cup.
Coach Mai Duc Chung wants to win 3 points against Portugal.
At the press conference, Mr. Chung said Portugal will likely play offensively against the Vietnamese women's team.
Therefore, he will let his students play tight defense and wait for the opportunity to launch the finishing blow against the opponent.
“This is the first time the Vietnamese women’s team has participated in the World Cup. On the FIFA rankings, Portugal is still 10 places above us.
They will raise their formation to attack. That is the condition for the Vietnamese women's team to deploy a tight defense and quick counterattack style," said coach Mai Duc Chung.
The coach of the Vietnamese women's team revealed that he has given his players a lot of practice in quick counter-attacks and has also learned from their matches against Germany, Spain and the US.
“I know it will be difficult against Portugal, but we have practiced tight defense and quick counter-attacks very carefully.
When we win the ball, we will deploy with just two or three very quick passes to create a finishing opportunity.
It would be great if we won tomorrow. Everyone wants to win.
We have played against Spain, Germany, and the United States. They are all high-level teams. Thanks to that, the Vietnamese women's team has learned a lot.
I see the whole team playing better. The players are more confident and know how to handle difficult situations.
If the opponent is taller and faster, Vietnamese players must stay far away from them. The whole team must clear the ball far away when defending, pass quickly and not play high balls," coach Mai Duc Chung continued.
Meanwhile, when evaluating the Vietnamese women's team, Portuguese coach Francisco Neto admitted that this is a very difficult opponent.
“The Vietnamese women’s team will play dangerous counter-attacks against Portugal. They are a well-organized team and will play bravely.
I believe that the Vietnamese women's team will continue to utilize fast players for defensive counter-attacking play," said Mr. Neto.
In the opening match of the 2023 World Cup, the Vietnamese women's team lost 0-3 to the US, while Portugal lost 0-1 to the Netherlands.
According to the schedule, the match between Vietnam and Portugal women's team will take place at 2:30 p.m. on July 27.
