(PLVN) - Developing the semiconductor sector is a strategic breakthrough and also a key task, something that needs to be done, must be done and is determined to be done. That is the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh when assigning general tasks and specific tasks and solutions to ministries, branches and localities, at the recently held First Session of the National Steering Committee on Semiconductor Industry Development.
The semiconductor industry is expected to become one of the new breakthrough drivers, bringing Vietnam into an era of growth. Recently, Vietnam has emerged as an attractive destination for investors in the semiconductor industry. In the semiconductor industry value chain, Vietnam is currently participating in many stages such as design, testing, packaging of microchips, and manufacturing of semiconductor-related equipment and materials. Currently, Vietnam has more than 50 microchip design enterprises with an estimated workforce of more than 6,000 engineers. The packaging and testing stage has 7 factories, with about 6,000 engineers and more than 10,000 technicians. Enterprises manufacturing equipment and materials for the semiconductor industry have also begun operations. Vietnam currently has 174 FDI projects in the semiconductor sector with a total registered capital of nearly 11.6 billion USD.
Confidence is well-founded as many leading technology corporations have specific plans to shift their supply chains to Vietnam, develop research centers, and expand investment, business, and production in Vietnam.
Nvidia Corporation has realized its commitment to “turn Vietnam into Nvida’s second home”, establishing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Development Center and an AI Data Center in Vietnam. In addition, Nvidia has also acquired VinBrain, an artificial intelligence company of Vingroup, to develop a large future design center in Vietnam. Recently, when coming to Vietnam to receive the VinFuture Award (December 5), billionaire Jensen Huang, Chairman of Nvida, expressed his impression of the future vision and strong determination of the Party and Government of Vietnam; assessed the competitive advantages, especially the quality of human resources, the potential for development and widespread application of new technologies in Vietnam.
To make the expectation come true, to make the semiconductor industry a real driving force, there is much to do. First of all, it is the legal framework, mechanisms, and policies; it is necessary to review, propose amendments, and supplement legal regulations, create favorable mechanisms and policies for the development of the semiconductor industry; develop an Investment Support Fund with many preferential breakthroughs for research and development center projects, projects in the fields of semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
Regarding human resources, many experts believe that higher education institutions need to urgently promote the connection between the three parties "State - school - enterprise" and organize short-term, medium-term, and long-term training to meet the requirements of building educational infrastructure and AI startups.
