With the desire to find a new direction, Mr. Chau Van Cuoi, residing in My Lo quarter, My Duc ward (Ha Tien city, Kien Giang province) borrowed capital to invest in a wild boar breeding model. Thanks to his boldness, daring to think and dare to do, Mr. Cuoi has earned hundreds of millions of dong each year.
Starting a business in the border area of My Duc, Chau Van Cuoi's family initially faced many difficulties. Every day, Mr. Cuoi and his wife had to work for hire and do business to earn an income to support their family.
Realizing the increasing demand for wild boar meat in the market, in 2015, Mr. Chau Van Cuoi borrowed 30 million VND from the Ward Farmers' Association to start a business with a wild boar farming model.
Taking advantage of the vacant land that was not suitable for farming, Mr. Cuoi built a pen to experimentally raise 3 wild boars.
At first, because the pigs had not yet adapted to the local climate and Mr. Cuoi did not have proper breeding techniques, the pigs developed slowly.
Not discouraged, Mr. Cuoi researched and learned through mass media to better understand the characteristics of wild boars, thanks to which the herd gradually developed well.
Mr. Chau Van Cuoi, a farmer raising wild boar in My Lo quarter, My Duc ward (Ha Tien city, Kien Giang province) takes care of his herd of wild boars.
Located nearly 1km away from residential areas, Mr. Cuoi's wild boar farm is still producing effectively and is built quite solidly.
According to Mr. Cuoi, his wild boar herd is still growing well even in the midst of the African swine fever outbreak. This safety is thanks to Mr. Cuoi's farm implementing closed-loop farming.
All the breeds are produced by the farm itself, the main source of food is elephant grass, which Mr. Cuoi grows himself on nearly 1 hectare of rice field. Taking advantage of pig manure, Mr. Cuoi fertilizes the elephant grass, thereby creating a closed and safe production model.
In addition, thanks to the farm raising native wild boars, and raising them in a semi-wild form, the wild boars grow in an environment similar to nature, helping them have good resistance and almost never get sick.
Talking about the "secret" to raising pigs to grow quickly, not letting diseases attack and ensuring the quality of commercial meat, according to Mr. Cuoi, is to regularly clean the environment, keep the barn well-ventilated in the dry season and warm enough in the cold season.
Mr. Chau Van Cuoi, residing in My Lo quarter, My Duc ward (Ha Tien city, Kien Giang province) cuts elephant grass to feed wild boars.
Currently, Mr. Cuoi's wild boar farm has nearly 100 pigs, of which more than half are pigs being raised for meat and are being prepared for sale, the rest are breeding pigs.
“To have a stable pig farm, I chose to build the pig farm far from residential areas because I was assured of disease safety. Although it is wild boar, we must fully vaccinate the pigs to increase their resistance. In nearly ten years of raising wild boar, I have never seen wild boar get sick,” said Mr. Cuoi.
Each year, pigs give birth to 2 litters, each litter has from 8 to 12 pigs/litter. Normally after 6 months of raising, pigs will reach a weight of 15-25kg/pig.
In addition to raising wild boars for meat, Mr. Cuoi now also specializes in producing and supplying wild boar breeds to serve the livestock needs of the people. “Compared to raising pigs for meat, raising wild boars now has a clear advantage in terms of output market.
While raising pigs for meat often encounters difficulties due to unstable output and selling prices, the market for wild boar consumption always has a stable price ranging from 120,000 - 150,000 VND/kg of live weight. After deducting all expenses, my family earns over 100 million VND per year.
Taking advantage of wild boar manure, Mr. Chau Van Cuoi fertilizes elephant grass and uses elephant grass as food for wild boars, thereby creating a closed, safe production model, a circular agricultural model, and reducing costs.
According to comrade Chau Chu - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of My Duc Ward, (Ha Tien City, Kien Giang Province), in the context of pig farming facing many difficulties as present, raising wild boars can be a new direction, in which the wild boar raising model of member Chau Van Cuoi is a typical model in the locality.
The Ward Farmers' Association also regularly lets members of the Ward Farmers' Association visit and learn about Mr. Cuoi's wild boar farming model.
So far, the number of members raising wild boars in the locality has increased compared to last year. “My Duc is a border ward with a large Khmer population.
In the ward, there are many good and effective economic models, of which the wild boar farming model of member Chau Van Cuoi is a typical model and can be replicated among members.
In the coming time, the Ward Farmers' Association will continue to replicate the model so that members can access the effective model and become rich on their homeland," said Comrade Chau Chu.
