Recreating the golden age of Hong Kong cinema
The main character in the film is Lok Yat-Yon (Lok Koo Tin-Lok), an inspector of the Hong Kong Police Major Crimes Unit, who is living a peaceful life with his small family. However, everything falls apart when his daughter, Jia Qi, is brutally murdered in the middle of a rainy night. It seems that the case will be solved quickly, but it is suddenly closed due to lack of evidence. The main suspect, Yau Chun-Wan (Lin Ka-Tung), is released.
Too painful to lose her child, helpless before the lax legal system, Nhat Ngon determined to seek justice, investigating the case himself regardless of the danger to bring the perpetrator to light.
“Huynh an truy hanh” has an old motif, revolving around the journey of revenge and solving crimes of a former police officer. However, the work still scores points thanks to the many details that pay tribute to Hong Kong crime films of the 1980s and 1990s, a period considered the golden age of Hong Kong cinema.
On his journey to solve cases, Nhat Ngon constantly faces many difficult choices between his conscience and personal feelings. Sometimes, he loses his ego, causing the line between right and wrong to blur.
The dark tone of the film creates a tense atmosphere, intensifying the conflict between the police and criminals. All of this contributes to creating eye-catching action scenes, elaborately staged, reminiscent of John Woo's films such as A Better Tomorrow, The Killer...
Thanks to the harmonious combination of action and psychological elements, along with a script that exploits the main character's inner thoughts, "Bloody Case Pursuit" helps viewers understand and sympathize with the character's pain. At the same time, the film also raises questions about the boundary between justice and revenge.
Affirming the class of Hong Kong actors
Playing the main role of Lac Nhat Ngon, Co Thien Lac excellently portrayed the character's inner turmoil, from a policeman who loved his job to a father who lost his child, then became a seeker of justice at all costs, ready to cross the boundaries of the law.
Louis Koo left a strong impression in close-up shots. The actor fully portrayed a haggard face, his eyes haunted by helplessness. He also demonstrated his action ability through fighting and chasing scenes, solidifying his position as Hong Kong's top action star.
Although Lam Ka Tung did not appear as much as Louis Koo, he still created his own appeal thanks to his subtle acting. The former TVB star made it impossible for the audience to guess the character's true motives and thoughts, thereby adding more surprises to the film.
Louis Koo and Lam Ka Tung have great chemistry in front of the camera. The two create a tense confrontation between a fierce police officer and a dangerous, scheming suspect. The encounters between the two characters are all thrilling battles of wits, helping the film maintain its dramatic intensity from beginning to end.
