GD&TĐ – Initially, Chinese was not the language Nguyen Thi Viet An chose, but thanks to the inspiration of her idol, An was determined to pursue this language.

In the 2024 high school graduation exam, Nguyen Thi Viet An, a former student of Nghe An Ethnic Minority High School, achieved a score of 27.89 points, becoming the valedictorian of block D78 (Literature 9 points, English 9.4; Social Science Group 9.08) majoring in Chinese Language, Da Nang University of Foreign Languages.

Secrets to mastering a second language

Talking to the petite girl from Nghe An about the secret to learning Chinese, Viet An shared that Chinese is not a subject taught in school, but she has to attend an outside center and study on her own.

From my practical experience, late learners of Chinese like me must be persistent, diligent and highly focused to be able to acquire knowledge as well as create excitement during the learning process so as not to get bored and learn effectively.

According to Viet An, learning Chinese, communication is the key to mastering the language. Therefore, during the learning process, the female valedictorian proactively sought opportunities to communicate through chat applications, connecting with Chinese people to improve pronunciation; to be bolder and more confident in the process of acquiring knowledge.

In addition to studying at the center every day, Viet An only spends 2-3 hours a day studying this subject. Thanks to that, after nearly a year of studying hard, the female student has reached HSK4 level (equivalent to B2 level with the ability to communicate, listen, read and understand basic Chinese).

When asked about the process of learning Chinese, An said: "The school does not have a Chinese subject, which makes me feel quite pressured, because I do not have daily contact with it in class like English.

Besides, I live in a small province and have few opportunities to interact directly with native speakers, which is also an obstacle and disadvantage, causing my pronunciation to sometimes be a bit Vietnamese. However, the female valedictorian always tries to find documents, learn vocabulary to form habits by watching movies, listening to music, reading Chinese books and newspapers.

It is known that Viet An's chance to learn Chinese was through a video of an idol introducing life in China. Since then, the Nghe An female student wanted to learn the language to learn about the culture of the neighboring country.

“Before that, my mother and family also wanted me to learn Chinese, but I refused. I didn’t start until the beginning of grade 12. Besides, I thought that with more foreign languages, future job opportunities would be more open, and my personal development would be more diverse. Learning is never too much,” Viet An shared.

Born and raised in Anh Son district, Nghe An province, the youngest child in a family with a mother who is a teacher, a father who works in the construction industry and an older sister who is a doctor. During his studies at Nghe An Ethnic Minority High School, Viet An had the opportunity to study better as well as experience life away from his family since the age of 15 to live in a collective and be independent.

Looking back on her studies at Nghe An Province Ethnic Minority High School, Nguyen Thi Viet An said: “I learned many life skills, how to get along with friends, how to arrange time for studying, and how to live neatly, tidily, and cleanly.

At the same time, the boarding environment gave me a lot of valuable experience for my current university studies, from how to make powerpoint, operate the computer, give presentations... when I first entered grade 10, helping me to be more confident, to try more new things like the field trips organized by the school."

When he learned that he was the valedictorian of the Chinese Language Department at Danang University of Foreign Languages, An could not hide his joy and surprise.

“This feeling is similar to the feeling from three years ago when I took the entrance exam to grade 10 and was the runner-up at Nghe An province's Ethnic Minority High School and also received a scholarship,” An confided.

Although they had prepared quite well for the journey to conquer their dreams, on the first day entering the university environment, Viet An and his friends were still bewildered by many new subjects.

To avoid being passive and pressured by changing environments, the female valedictorian researched her own study methods.

“In addition to trying to maintain my form to study well in my chosen major, I will register for school activities, participate in events and join clubs to practice soft skills, as well as help myself become more confident,” An expressed.

As a companion and monitor of Viet An during his three years of studying at Nghe An Ethnic Minority High School, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kieu Hoa - Principal of the school assessed that Viet An is a diligent student, has good learning awareness, and is responsible in school and class work. For three consecutive years, he was an excellent student and an excellent Youth Union Secretary, receiving a certificate of merit from the Vinh City Youth Union.
