The path to foreign languages of a female student in the mountainous region

Talking to Linh, she is quite reserved. When asked about the secret to learning English well, Linh shared that learning a foreign language must first come from a passion for that language. She herself has loved English since she was a child.

It is known that my chance to learn this second language came when I read books and songs in English online. Since then, I have been passionate about this language without even realizing it.

In junior high school, having the opportunity to study and be exposed to English in depth in regular classes, her love for it grew even more, thanks to which she achieved many good academic results. In particular, Linh won second prize in the provincial English competition in grade 9.

When asked about her English learning process, Linh said: “My hometown is not a place with ideal conditions for me to develop my passion for learning English, but I think this language will be a good opportunity for me to change my future.

That is the reason why I stick with this subject despite the many difficulties I encounter, especially when the environment and conditions do not allow me to interact with native speakers, making this the main barrier to my speaking ability.

However, I am truly grateful to my teachers and family for creating an environment where my friends and I can communicate regularly in English, which helps improve many of my skills.”

In high school, Linh became the vice president of the school's English club. To be proactive in learning English, in addition to actively listening to teachers in class, Linh researched topics online in advance and practiced her English skills.

In addition, the female student also improves her vocabulary using the spaced repetition method.

“After learning new words, she will review them after a 30-minute break, repeating this several times to form a habit and remember the vocabulary more deeply,” Linh said.

Telling her story, Linh shared that she admired a famous MC who was from her hometown. This was a source of inspiration for her to strive, a motivation to help her determined to get high results in the university entrance exam, and also an opportunity to help her achieve her dream.

“It was my love for English that fueled my dream of becoming an English teacher,” Chu Bao Linh shared.

Born and raised in Tuong Duong district, Nghe An province; the eldest daughter in a family of farming parents, with two younger siblings still in school, Bao Linh always studies hard to set an example for her younger siblings to follow.

One of the environments that inspired me to love and decide to choose the Pedagogy major was the time I studied at Nghe An Province Ethnic Minority High School.

Chu Thi Bao Linh said: “When I was in 10th grade, I left my family to study in Vinh city. At first, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed, and sometimes cried because I missed home. But looking back, it was a good opportunity for me to practice independence and not rely on my parents so much anymore. Besides, the teachers at school always encouraged, supported and listened to our difficulties like they were my own parents.”

When she heard that she was the valedictorian of the English Pedagogy major, Linh was extremely happy and surprised. The valedictorian shared: “I didn’t expect to be the candidate with the highest score in the major. This is a stepping stone for me to strive and make efforts to become a teacher.”

Entering the new environment, the female student determined to win the title of 5 Good Student, besides joining the Du Ca club specializing in singing which is her hobby.

As the person who guided and tutored Linh during her 3 years of high school, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Trinh - a teacher at Nghe An Ethnic Minority High School shared: "Since middle school, Bao Linh has won the second prize in the provincial excellent student category in English. She has a talent for singing and often hosts English club programs. In grade 12, achieving 6.5 IELTS was a great effort of hers, especially when she was a student from the mountainous district of Tuong Duong who came to Vinh city to study. In grade 12, Linh won the second prize in the provincial excellent student category in English and was in group A to compete with Phan Boi Chau school, which is also a remarkable achievement."
