As a worker at Cao Bang Electricity Company, on September 9, Mr. NVN, 29 years old in Nguyen Binh, Cao Bang, was on his way home from Bao Lac district to fix the power line when he unfortunately had an accident, was swept away and buried by a flash flood.
He was seriously injured with multiple injuries to the skull, a fractured left femur and a broken left arm. Mr. N. was taken to the emergency room by local residents. On September 11, he was transferred to a higher-level medical facility for brain surgery.
However, 3 days after surgery, Mr. N. had a continuous high fever with lethargy, cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities, treatment did not improve and he was transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
Mr. N. was diagnosed with purulent meningitis/multiple trauma-traumatic brain injury-fracture of the lower third of the left femur, fracture of the lower third of the left forearm radius. After receiving the patient, interdisciplinary doctors: Emergency, General Infection; Orthopedic Trauma Surgery and Spinal Neurology consulted and provided emergency care.
According to Dr. Nguyen Hong Long, Deputy Head of the General Infection Department, the patient was transferred to the hospital in a serious condition of purulent meningitis after brain surgery. Fortunately, the patient's condition responded well to the treatment, so after a week of emergency treatment, Mr. N.'s fever was gone and his inflammation indicators returned to normal.
When the purulent meningitis was stable, Mr. N. underwent surgery to fuse the fractured lower third of the radius of his left forearm and the fractured lower third of his left femur.
According to Dr. Nguyen Giang An, Department of Orthopedic Trauma and Spinal Neurology, the fracture was very complicated with many broken bone fragments, so the doctors decided to use screws to fix the femur and radius, compress the fracture to fix it together, and separate the soft tissue to avoid damaging the blood vessels that nourish the bone at the lowest level to help the bone heal the fastest.
The surgery lasted two hours and was a great success. Seven days after the surgery, Mr. N. recovered very well and was transferred to the Department of Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation for early rehabilitation of his left arm and left leg.
Specialist Doctor I Le Nguyen Long, Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation, said that the patient was treated with rehabilitation to stretch the muscles in the femur and forearm after surgery. With the method of exercise through massage therapy combined with acupuncture to minimize muscle atrophy and joint stiffness, Mr. N. quickly regained feeling and gradually moved gently in his left arm and left leg.
Currently, Mr. N.'s health is gradually recovering and he is being transferred to a specialized hospital to prepare for the next skull transplant surgery.
