After the match with Hong Kong, the Vietnamese team will have their second test in the June training session within the framework of FIFA Days, which is the match against Syria on June 20. To prepare for this match, coach Philippe Troussier has called up 30 players, including 21 players who participated in the match on June 15 with Hong Kong, along with 9 newly registered players.
The last time they met Syria, the Vietnamese team won 2-0 (in 2016). Coach Troussier's team's opponent is ranked 90th in the world. In 2023, the West Asian representative will play 2 friendly matches, including a 3-1 victory over Thailand and a 0-1 loss to Bahrain.
Vietnam team had a difficult match against Hong Kong team
Coach Troussier stated his opinion: "I value every match, every competition is important. The media sometimes puts us in a superior position in some matches, but I respect every opponent. The Syrian team is better than us in terms of ranking, and at the same time, they are also superior in terms of strength. The Syrian team is better than us in the number of players with experience playing abroad. However, that is only in theory, but in football, the result is shown on the field through the confrontation of 11 players on each team.
The Vietnamese team has home field advantage and the support of a large number of fans. I feel that the current Vietnamese team is united both collectively and tactically. The players have the desire and motivation to conquer challenges. I consider the match against Syria a challenge to overcome in preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. We are in the process of perfecting and finding suitable players, so we will try our best."
Talking about the defensive mistakes in the match against Hong Kong, coach Troussier said that it was a result of the playing style.
"In the context of the match against Hong Kong, when they had 80% possession, when they had the ball, the Vietnamese team pushed the formation distance up high and expanded, so every situation where the players lost the ball was an opportunity for the opponent to attack quickly. After the match, we practiced, practiced counter-attacks and transitions. The problem does not come from the defenders' ability because they defend well, but to play well on the field in defense, they need to adjust to adapt to the collective tactical problem. In the match against Syria, we will encounter similar situations. The players and I will prepare more carefully. When we have the ball, we need to prepare the defensive structure in advance. I want the players to play smarter and more skillfully in defense.
For me, intensity and tactics are what players need to do in international matches. The players are working hard, similar to what I saw in Japan. I have a very positive feeling about the squad, every player is trying to show themselves. I told the players that we have to surpass Southeast Asia because we have won the regional championship many times, if we want to surpass and play on par with strong teams, we have to be more proactive, wiser, more skillful, and more careful in open situations, not just waiting for set pieces. They have to push themselves individually and collectively. The match against Syria is an opportunity for them to prove what they want to show," the French coach emphasized.
