A 3-2 aggregate win in the quarter-finals (the two teams drew 2-2 at Arsenal in the first leg) saw Bayern Munich reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since winning the title in 2020. The German champions will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals for a place in the final.
Bayern Munich beat Arsenal to reach semi-finals
Defeat in Germany continued a bad week for Arsenal, who lost their place at the top of the Premier League last weekend with their first defeat of 2024.
Unlike the first leg in London, which saw four goals scored, both teams were cautious in the second leg as there were few clear-cut chances created in the first half. Midway through the second half and with the game seemingly going into extra time, Joshua Kimmich scored with a header in the 63rd minute, bringing victory to the "Gray Tigers".
Thus, this season's Champions League semi-finals feature two German sides after Dortmund advanced past the quarter-finals to meet PSG in the semi-finals. Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel is taking another step towards the top spot in Europe's top club competition, as he did with Chelsea in 2021.
Arsenal's disappointment
Meanwhile, Arsenal's hopes of returning to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2009 were ended. Arteta's side now face a repeat of last season's disappointment when the Gunners slumped towards the end of the season and came away empty-handed.
Despite having enough players and showing good form recently, Arsenal are often suspected of not being able to overcome the pressure at important moments. And that has more or less happened, typically in the 0-2 home defeat to Aston Villa last week and most recently the defeat at Bayern Munich.
