According to MarketWatch, Google Maps is the most popular navigation app, preferred by drivers, especially those who want to avoid speed traps. In a survey of more than 1,000 drivers in the US with an average age of 41 (50/50 male/female ratio) conducted by MarketWatch and combined with data from the Speedtrap website, more than 70% of participants chose to use Google Maps.
Waze is the second most popular navigation app on the list. It was a successful startup before being acquired by Google, but it still operates separately from Maps. 27% of drivers choose Waze, while only 25% use Apple Maps - the "official" mapping app on iOS.
Google Maps is trusted by many people
In addition to the navigation feature with suggestions for the shortest, most suitable routes for the vehicle, drivers also trust the above applications because of the ability to display detailed journeys. Of which, 34% of drivers said that the map software warned them in advance of speed traps.
“Speed traps” are areas where the maximum speed limit is lower than the safety standards allowed by the road, where the police regularly monitor, measure and penalize speeding cases. About 30% of Americans have been caught speeding in such areas.
Even though 70% of drivers use Google Maps to get speed trap alerts, Waze is still considered the best app for the job, with 30% of drivers saying it’s better than Google Maps and 20% saying it’s better than Apple Maps.
Yet 23% of Google Maps users admit they often speed, compared to 11% and 9% for Waze and Apple Maps, respectively.
