The 2023 Evian Championship kicked off on July 27. Reto started with a par on the 10th hole and then made a bogey. However, after that problem, she took eight birdies to take sole possession of the top spot, at -7 when the tournament ended round 1. Right behind Reto was T2 (-5) with four players, including former world number one Lydia Ko and local star Celine Boutier. Defending champion Brooke Henderson was only -2 and at T19, right above Ko Jin Young - the current leader in the women's world golf rankings (Rolex Rankings).

In the opening match, Reto averaged 258 yards, hit 10 of 13 fairways, reached the green in 13 holes and putted 24 times. She scored the most birdies in the first round thanks to her high efficiency in closing holes.

Before the tournament, Reto was ranked 81st in the Rolex Rankings for women's professional golf. The South African has been playing professionally since 2013, has played 181 LPGA Tour events, but has only won one cup, at the CP Women's Open in Canada in August 2022. This season alone, Reto has been cut eight times after 16 events.

This year’s Evian Championship has a prize fund of $6.5 million, marking its 10th year and placing second to last on the annual women’s major calendar. Since joining the prestigious group, the tournament has been held at the resort of the same name in Evian-les-Bains, France. This place is located on the shores of Lake Geneva, bordering Switzerland. The current championship points record is -21, set by Chun In-Gee in 2016, and no player has defended the cup in the past decade.

The women's majors, in addition to the Evian Championship, include the Chevron Championship, Women's PGA Championship, and the US and British Women's Open.
