3 reasons why teachers give extra lessons

Associate Professor Dr. Do Phu Tran Tinh, Director of Policy Development Institute - Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that when interviewing a number of teachers in Binh Thuan, Tay Ninh and Hau Giang (to carry out a scientific project at Ho Chi Minh City National University), many people confided that, apart from some cases of "one bad apple spoiling the barrel" in extra teaching activities, this need is real. They gave 3 reasons for extra teaching.

Firstly, due to the disease of achievement, many weak students are still "created conditions" to move up to the next grade or transfer to another level. As a result, these students lose their foundation, cannot absorb and keep up with the knowledge they are learning in class, and feel bored with studying. In this case, parents really need to let their children take extra classes to consolidate their knowledge.

Second, a number of parents today have very high expectations for their children, so they want their children to take extra classes, especially preparatory classes to get into good schools.

Third, many parents are civil servants or workers, with fixed working hours so they cannot pick up their children on time. They need teachers to take them home, tutor them, or even take care of their children's meals and drinks.

Faced with the above needs, teachers have to teach "underground", which seriously damages the image of teachers in the eyes of students and society, but because of the "burden of making a living", they are forced to do so.

Teachers and administrators all say they know which teachers in their school teach extra classes at home or hire others to teach, but they "ignore" them, except in cases where parents report being forced to take extra classes or are sued, then they have a headache to deal with.

In addition, students' critical thinking ability is developing, so if any teacher "uses the trick of forcing students to take extra classes", students will react strongly. With the development of information today, especially social networks, "catching bad apples" is not difficult if they are given a clear mechanism with strong enough sanctions.

Up to 63.57% of teachers expressed their desire to legalize extra teaching, including tutoring at home and online tutoring, to increase their income from their own abilities. At the same time, maintaining the noble image of the teaching profession in the eyes of students and society is better than doing side jobs that are less related to the profession.

Teachers defamed on social media

Also according to Associate Professor Dr. Do Phu Tran Tinh, when interviewing teachers, especially young teachers, many teachers confided that: "Although they spend very frugally, their salary runs out before the end of the month, many teachers do not dare to have girlfriends because they cannot find the money to "spend on love expenses".

In addition to teaching, teachers have many “side jobs” such as farming, small businesses, online sales, and delivery. This group of part-time jobs falls mainly on primary and secondary school teachers. The income from teachers’ side jobs has contributed significantly to helping them cover their family expenses, contributing an average of about 12% of their total income.

According to Mr. Tinh, teachers are under a lot of pressure, the biggest of which is from students' parents. "Up to 40.63% of teachers have considered changing careers due to mental violence from parents," Mr. Tinh said.

Interviewing teachers in the school board, subject group leaders and teachers, Mr. Tinh said that all levels have the same opinion that many parents have too high expectations, often deeply interfere in teaching work, and even put pressure on grades. They constantly monitor, ask questions and request detailed reports on their children's learning situation via Zalo or Facebook groups...

“What is worrying is that some teachers have reported that some parents have seriously offended teachers, such as coming directly to school to quarrel, curse, or even assault teachers when their children are criticized, reminded, or do not achieve high scores. Many teachers also face threats or defamation on social networks. This not only makes teachers feel tired, stressed, lose control and sensitivity in their work, seriously affects the quality of education, but also creates a bad image in the eyes of students about the relationship between school and family,” according to Mr. Tinh.
