World's top professor explains why stroke rate among young Vietnamese is increasing

VTC NewsVTC News05/12/2024

Professor Valery Feigin, Director of the National Institute of Stroke and Applied Neuroscience, Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand) said that the burden of stroke in Vietnam, especially among young people, is increasing rapidly. The main causes are high blood pressure, unhealthy lifestyles, especially smoking habits, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diets such as excessive alcohol consumption and some other causes from heart rhythm disorders.

To control these problems, young people need to be aware of their stroke risk and the risk factors that need to be specifically controlled. "However, unfortunately most people are not aware of the risk of the disease," he said, adding that stroke risk factors are different for each young person.

According to Professor Valery Feigin, the biggest challenge today is that stroke is increasing and there is still no effective strategy for prevention. Therefore, during this visit to Vietnam, he will participate in supporting medical research units and the Ministry of Health to develop primary and secondary stroke prevention strategies based on digital tools that he and his colleagues have developed in New Zealand.

There is compelling evidence that this solution can reduce strokes by 50% in Vietnam and other countries. The solution has been supported by the World Stroke Organization.

He added that existing prevention programs in Vietnam are not much different from those in other low- to middle-income countries. Therefore, he will provide a revolutionary new strategy for stroke and cardiovascular disease prevention through digital tools, which have been proven effective in a number of other countries.

The tools he suggests should be used in conjunction with other prevention strategies, such as polypills to lower blood pressure and control blood lipids like cholesterol. When combined with these solutions, digital tools are particularly effective and have been shown to produce positive results in practice.

Young people may be interested in two digital tools for stroke prevention and diagnosis. One is for the general public: the Stroke Riskometer - a free app, translated into 25 languages and used in more than 100 countries. The other is the Prevents MD Web App, designed for clinicians such as doctors, nurses and health professionals to help them develop personalized, patient-focused prevention recommendations, focusing on the patient's lifestyle risk factors.

This expert further emphasized that awareness of stroke and risk factors is the first step. People need to know that the risk of stroke is real. It can happen to anyone. Knowing your risk is the first step, knowing the risk factors you may encounter is the second step and knowing how to control the risk factors is the third step.

According to Web of Science, since 2018, Professor Valery Feigin has been consistently ranked in the top 1% of the world's most cited scientists in all scientific fields. Professor Feigin is co-chair of the Global Policy Committee of the World Stroke Organization and a member of the World Health Organization Technical Advisory Group (WHO TAG) on Research and Innovation related to Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs).

Within the framework of the Science and Technology Week and VinFuture Awards Ceremony 2024, he was a speaker at the panel discussion "Innovations in Cardiovascular Healthcare and Stroke Treatment" - one of a series of four scientific panels within the VinFuture Awards Week season 4.
