Bui Xuan Phai Award - For the Love of Hanoi 2023: Grand Prize awarded to People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh

The Bui Xuan Phai Award - For the Love of Hanoi was established in 2008 by the Sports and Culture newspaper (Vietnam News Agency) and the family of the late painter Bui Xuan Phai, to award authors, works, ideas, and activities of high scientific and artistic value, imbued with love for Hanoi.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Mr. Le Xuan Thanh - Editor-in-Chief of Sports & Culture Newspaper, Head of the Organizing Committee of the award affirmed: "We should not wait until the beautiful things have passed before we look back with regret. Right now, around us there are still many, many authors, works, ideas, and silent work, for the love of Hanoi.

And Sports and Culture journalists set themselves a mission to seek and honor those values ​​by making efforts to maintain the Bui Xuan Phai Award - For the Love of Hanoi, an award named after the talented painter who left Hanoi Pho Phai - Phai Pho with his love. We also want to continue that love and spread it to the general public."

Journalist Le Xuan Thanh - Editor-in-Chief of Sports and Culture newspaper delivered the opening speech.

From 31 initial nominations, through preliminary and final rounds, the Jury has approved the Official Nomination List and this year's Awards, including 11 nominations, across 4 categories.

The Work category alone has 4 nominations. This reflects the richness and outstanding quality of the works and projects “for the love of Hanoi” published in recent times.

Based on the official nomination list, the Jury voted to select the final results. What is special is that in the Work category, due to the large number of entries this year, up to 4 works/projects were officially nominated, so the Jury decided to award 2 Work of the Year awards.

Mr. Ho Minh Tuan received the Work Award - For the Love of Hanoi on behalf of his father, author Ho Cong Thiet.

Specifically, the "Grand Prize - For the Love of Hanoi" was awarded to director, People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh for his contributions to Hanoi with excellent literary and cinematic works.

Two "Works - For the Love of Hanoi" Awards were given to: The book "Hang Bot Street, a "trivial" story to remember" by Ho Cong Thiet (published by Lao Dong Publishing House and Chibooks); The photo exhibition "Hanoi Streets 1985-2015: In the Years of Forgetting" by William E. Crawford, co-organized by Manzi Art Space and Art Vietnam Gallery with sponsorship from the US Embassy in Vietnam.

Journalist Ho Quang Loi - Vice President of Vietnam Digital Communications Association awarded the Jobs - For the Love of Hanoi award to the winning author.

The "Job - For the love of Hanoi" award was given to: Festival "Autumn Hanoi - Come to love" organized by the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion of Hanoi City (Hanoi People's Committee).

The "Idea - For the love of Hanoi" prize was awarded to: The policy and active preparations of Hanoi City, Hanoi Capital University and related units to make "Hanoi Studies" a subject in general education in Hanoi.

According to the award's tradition, each year, although considering a list of many candidates in this most important category, the Jury only announces one nomination for the "Grand Prize - For the Love of Hanoi" and awards the prize to that nomination.

The Organizing Committee awarded the Idea - For the Love of Hanoi prize to the winning author.

This is also the most important category of the Award, awarded annually to those who “have made lifelong contributions to Hanoi through outstanding works, ideas, and deeds, and through their close attachment to Hanoi throughout their lives and careers,” as stipulated in the Award Regulations.

Director and People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh was awarded the Grand Prize this year for his outstanding contributions to Hanoi through his cinematic and literary works imbued with historical and humanistic values ​​about Hanoi.

Mr. Ha Minh Hai - Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee and journalist Nguyen Thi Su - Deputy General Director of VNA awarded the 16th Grand Prize - For the Love of Hanoi - 2023 to People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh.

When mentioning Dang Nhat Minh, we immediately think of Bao gio cho den thang Muoi (1985) and Thuong nho dong que (1995)... Those are the works that brought his name to the world. However, Dang Nhat Minh's massive film career is not limited to that. He also has other important works such as Tro ve, Ha Noi mua dong nam 46, Mua guava... and most recently Hoa jasmine (2022).

These are films in which the theme of Hanoi appears more or less, densely or faintly, and is exploited by Dang Nhat Minh in many dimensions, from current events to people. So that the mark of Hanoi becomes an important part of Dang Nhat Minh's career from literature to cinema with works that go with the times and are truly Hanoi.

People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh confided: "Hanoi is as dear to me as a blood relative. From the years of growing up until now, I have been attached to Hanoi. Hanoi has shaped my artistic personality - a person who works in cinema until today all because of Hanoi. Thank you to the Organizing Committee of Bui Xuan Phai Award for giving me this Grand Prize - as a recognition of my passionate love for Hanoi, the award is even more precious when I received it in the memorable days of October".
