Progress increases every day

Since the first sand mines were handed over by An Giang province under a special mechanism to serve the construction of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, the construction site has become bustling and the project's construction progress has increased day by day.

Since the sand arrived, the construction progress of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, the section passing through An Giang province, has increased day by day.

At package number 44, Mr. Vo Dai Thach, Project Manager, Thanh Huy Group Joint Stock Company (construction contractor) said that the Western cross-axis expressway section constructed by the contractor has a length of 5.7km.

Since sand was brought to the construction site on April 15, the contractor's construction has become more favorable and the project progress has increased day by day, reaching more than 50% of the assigned work volume.

At the construction site, the contractor has arranged 10 construction teams, including 4 road construction teams, 4 bridge construction teams and 2 drainage construction teams. Currently, workers are mainly focusing on constructing the upper structure and making the bridge railings.

The contractor is busy working to meet the schedule from now until the end of the year to complete the roadbed loading.

In addition, workers were also organized to construct the roadbed, perform the elevation of the wick placement and construct 5km of soil cement piles. Notably, up to this point, the contractor has filled the roadbed with sand for 1.5km.

“Currently, the average amount of sand arriving at the construction site is 2,500m3/day, ensuring the target of December 31st, the contractor will complete the weak soil treatment. In addition, the contractor plans to complete the entire bridge section this year,” Mr. Thach added.

Efforts to complete roadbed loading

For packages that were provided with enough sand for the day, construction was basically smooth. For locations that required more sand, the contractor proposed solutions to overcome difficulties in order to meet the assigned schedule.

Major Nguyen Dinh Du, Deputy Director of Truong Son 11 Management Board, Truong Son Construction Corporation (contractor for package 42) said that according to the plan, from now until the end of the year, the contractor must complete the 13.7km long roadbed loading.

However, the current difficulty for contractors is that the actual demand for sand at the construction site is 10,000m3 of sand/day, but each day, the amount of sand delivered to the construction site is only 2,000m3 of sand/day, meeting 20% ​​of the sand demand needed for construction.

Meanwhile, the average time for roadbed loading is about 12 months to ensure technical factors. Therefore, the contractor's solution is to use alternative materials to load the roadbed, and this material will be reused by the contractor for construction after unloading at the end of 2025.

“Due to the urgent nature of the work, the contractor proposed a solution to use crushed stone instead of sand to load the roadbed. Only then, from now until the end of 2024, can the contractor ensure the construction progress according to the proposed plan,” Major Du added.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh, an officer of the consulting and supervision unit of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, the section passing through An Giang province, said that adding roadbed load is understood as making the soil structure tighter.

Therefore, in addition to using sand, contractors can use other materials with equivalent weight to create drainage pressure and compact the roadbed. After the roadbed is compacted according to regulations, the contractor removes the loading layer and begins construction.

“The contractor’s use of crushed stone for loading still ensures technical aspects. This method shows the contractor’s flexibility and efforts in meeting the project’s progress according to regulations,” said Mr. Dinh.

The Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Transport and Agricultural Works of An Giang Province (investor) said that the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang Expressway, the section passing through the province, has four bidding packages: 42, 43, 44 and 45.

Up to now, the project progress has reached 32.88%. Of which, package 42 has reached 26.04% progress, package 43 has reached 32.91% progress, package 44 has reached 47.7% progress and package 45 has reached 26.17%.

The Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang Expressway Project Phase 1 has a total length of 188.2km passing through 4 provinces: An Giang, Can Tho, Hau Giang and Soc Trang.
The starting point connects to National Highway 91 in Chau Doc city (An Giang) and the end point intersects with Nam Song Hau National Highway, connecting to Tran De port access road (Soc Trang), with a total investment of 44,691 billion VND. The entire route is expected to be completed and put into use in 2027.
Of which, component project 1 in An Giang province is 57.2km long, component project 2 in Can Tho city is 37.2km long, component project 3 in Hau Giang province is nearly 37km long and component project 4 in Soc Trang province is 56.9km long.
In phase 1, the project will be invested in a 4-lane scale, with a design speed of 100km/h. In the final phase, the project will be invested in a 6-lane scale.
