The ruffled skirt style that emerged a few months ago has shown signs of cooling down, but recently Zendaya has "revived" it in her appearance in New York, USA. Vogue magazine believes that the appearance of "Spiderman's girlfriend" will help this skirt style continue to maintain its popularity.
The design, commonly known as the “bubble skirt,” is a mix of youthful femininity and romance. According to Harper’s Bazaar , Google searches for the style spiked in March this year. Fashion influencers Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber have been spotted wearing them in recent months.

In Vietnam, this dress style was once so popular that it appeared on all social media platforms when worn by many artists and influencers. They are often called pumpkin dresses.
Domestic brands also caught up with the trend to launch separate and bodycon skirts to serve the needs of young "customers".

The Origin of the Puffy Dress
A bubble dress is a round, flared design that is often folded at the bottom to create volume. This style of dress comes in a variety of lengths, from red carpet length to short, even micro-mini.
The origins of the crinoline can be traced back to the 1950s, according to Glamour magazine. That was when tight, utilitarian clothing was replaced by extravagance and frivolity. Christian Dior thrived on the voluminous skirts and slim waists of the time.

In Spain, Cristóbal Balenciaga interpreted the female form in a different way. He experimented with voluminous silhouettes like sack dresses and balloon coats, highlighting the distance between the garment and the wearer.
In 1954, French designer Pierre Cardin—who had just left Dior to start his own line at the time—launched the first voluminous dress. He tightened the hem at the sides to create a spherical bottom, adding layers of tulle underneath. The look remained popular throughout the decade.
After giving way to slimmer silhouettes in later years, the flared skirt made a comeback in the 80s. The style was even a favorite of Princess Diana, who famously wore flared skirts and double-breasted jackets on multiple occasions.
The 1980s love affair with all things puffy, from skirts to sleeves to hair, has left some skeptical about the return of the crinoline in modern times. However, many young designers are proving that fashion is timeless and never boring, as they showcase bubble dresses that are suitable for today’s youth.
Back to a more modern direction
The 2010s saw a rise in a sweet, feminine feel on the runways, with designers like Simone Rocha, Shu Shu Tong, Sandy Liang and Cecilie Bahnsen emerging. For them, the voluminous balloon shape has long been a staple, setting the stage for the return of the crinoline.

Louis Vuitton's maximalist Resort 2020 collection saw a return to '80s-inspired puffy skirts in stripes, hot pinks and faux leather. For Spring/Summer 2023, puffy skirts appeared at Ulla Johnson, Proenza Schouler, Simone Rocha and Undercover. At Schiaparelli's Fall/Winter 2023 Haute Couture show, audiences witnessed a cloud-like buttery vanilla skirt paired with a super short blouse.
Jacquemus, Miu Miu, Coperni and Marine Serre all then introduced their own versions of the puffy skirt, from delicate hems to mini-flare skirts or spherical long skirts. Flexibility was also emphasized, and it could be worn in formal, casual, elegant, or youthful styles...

How to dress beautifully with pumpkin dress
When hearing about puffy skirts, many people often worry about them not being suitable for daily walks and meetings. However, puffy skirts have proven that they are not just the main outfit on the catwalk or red carpet.
On warmer days, a mini skirt can be paired with a short or tight top to balance out the flowy silhouette of the design. Off-the-shoulder or bandeau styles are also popular options. However, a simple T-shirt can work just as well.

"To maintain a feminine look, ballet flats or thin-soled sneakers are perfect. To add height, choose heels (with socks) or knee-high boots," suggests Harper's Bazaar editor Sharyn Budiarto.
In winter, a flowing dress paired with a thick sweater and scarf is a popular choice. Women should choose a dress length that reaches the knee or mid-calf for a warmer look. For those who love a strong look, combining it with a sports shirt will create a contrasting look with a strong blokette (a combination of blokecore and coquette aesthetics, blending sporty style with a sweet, feminine touch).
