According to the Korea Customs Service, the total export value of soju in 2023 reached 101.4 million USD, up 8.7% compared to 2022. The last time soju exports exceeded 100 million USD was in 2013.
Soju is a distilled liquor made from ethyl alcohol and water, with added sweeteners.
Soju sold overseas was previously consumed mainly by Koreans, but soju has become increasingly popular among people in countries where it is imported thanks to the rise of Korean pop culture, an industry source said.
Soju exports have declined in recent years, from $97.6 million to $89.7 million in 2019 and to $82.4 million in 2021. The figure rebounded to $93.3 million in 2022 and is expected to rise.
Japan was the largest importer of Korean soju with a value of more than 30 million USD, followed by the US with 23.6 million USD.
Soju is considered a national liquor of Korean people. This type of liquor is usually not too strong, has moderate alcohol concentration, suitable for both men and women.
Koreans often like to drink wine chilled to feel the more attractive flavor. However, liking to drink cold does not mean putting ice inside the wine because it will dilute the inherent flavor. This is also the reason why Koreans never put ice inside the wine when using it.
