Although rice prices have decreased significantly compared to before the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin in 2024, rice prices are currently high and farmers still reap high profits from harvesting rice.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Dang (Vinh Tri commune, Vinh Hung district) has just harvested 6 hectares of Dai Thom 8 rice variety, saying that in recent crops, due to low rice prices and increased prices of agricultural materials, production profits were not high. However, in the 2023 - 2024 Winter-Spring crop, things have improved again when rice prices have increased and productivity is quite high. Specifically, his family's 6 hectares of rice yielded more than 7 tons/ha, with a selling price of 8,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, earning a profit of nearly 30 million VND/ha.

Not only farmers in Vinh Hung district, thousands of hectares of winter-spring rice in Tan Hung district have been harvested, with stable prices and high profits, farmers are very excited. Mr. Nguyen Van Vu (Vinh Dai commune, Tan Hung district) has just harvested 4 hectares of OM 18 rice, with a yield of nearly 8 tons/ha, a selling price of 7,700 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, a profit of more than 140 million VND.

Proactively prevent pests and diseases

Currently, in the 2023 - 2024 Winter-Spring rice crop, 1,665 hectares are infected with whitefly, down 580 hectares compared to last week, concentrated on rice at the tillering and heading stages in Tan Hung, Vinh Hung districts and Kien Tuong town. Brown planthopper, the infected area is 1,450 hectares, down 561 hectares compared to last week, concentrated on rice at the heading stage in Tan Hung, Vinh Hung, Thanh Hoa, Thu Thua, Duc Hoa districts and Kien Tuong town.

In addition, there are other harmful organisms such as early ripening yellow leaf disease (374ha), small leaf roller (285ha), leaf blast disease (170ha), rats (148ha), neck blast disease (108ha), rice stem borer (100ha), ... appearing on rice fields at the tillering, heading, and ripening stages, mainly concentrated in most districts, Kien Tuong town and Tan An city.

It is forecasted that brown planthoppers will appear sporadically, and leaf blast and mice will decrease in infected area on winter-spring rice at the tillering stage. Leaf blight, armyworms, brown planthoppers, whitefly, rice blast, etc. will increase in infected area on winter-spring rice at the heading and ripening stages.

To ensure a successful crop, based on recommendations from experts, farmers need to be more proactive in caring for and protecting their fields by regularly visiting them to promptly detect pests and diseases and take effective preventive measures.
