Pepper export price reaches highest level among agricultural products

According to data from the General Department of Customs, in the first half of July 2024 (from July 1 to July 15), Vietnam earned 898 million USD from exporting agricultural products, an increase of 21% over the same period last year.

In general, in the first half of July, along with the increase in volume (except for coffee), the average export price of agricultural products also increased, contributing to pushing the turnover higher than the same period last year.

In this group, fruits and vegetables have the largest turnover with 238 million USD, however, this is the item with the lowest growth rate, up 0.5% compared to the same period last year.

Cashew nuts brought in the second largest turnover with 196 million USD, up 39% over the same period last year. The increase in turnover of this item occurred along with the growth in volume with an increase of 28% over the same period last year, from 24,911 tons to 32,096 tons. In the first half of July 2024, the average export price of cashew nuts reached 6,119 USD/ton, up 8% compared to 5,644 USD/ton in the same period last year.

Although the volume of coffee exports decreased sharply by 40% compared to the same period last year, from 53,925 tons to 32,041 tons. However, thanks to the average export price of coffee increasing by 75% compared to the same period last year, reaching 4,944 USD/ton, it contributed to bringing the export turnover of this item to 158 million USD, an increase of 4.1% compared to the same period last year.

In the first half of July 2024, pepper was the commodity with the highest increase in export price among agricultural products.

In the first half of July, rice also recorded positive growth with export volume reaching 290,035 tons and turnover reaching 177 million USD, up 15% and 30% respectively over the same period last year. The average rice export price increased by 12%, reaching 612.3 USD/ton.

Pepper was the commodity with the highest increase in export price, up 55% over the same period last year, from 3,686 USD/ton to 5,727 USD/ton. Pepper export volume increased 53% over the same period last year, reaching 10,796 tons, contributing to pushing export turnover to 61 million USD, an increase of 137%. This was also the only commodity with triple-digit growth in turnover in the agricultural product group.

Preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA) show that in the first 15 days of July 2024, Vietnam exported 9,993 tons of pepper, with a total export turnover of 56.5 million USD.

Previously, by the end of June 2024, Vietnam had exported 142,586 tons of pepper of all kinds, down 6.8% in volume but up 30.5% in value. Of which, the amount of black pepper exported reached 125,959 tons, white pepper reached 16,627 tons. The total export turnover reached 634.2 million USD, black pepper reached 539.9 million USD, white pepper reached 94.3 million USD. Thus, by mid-July 2024, pepper exports earned 690.7 million USD.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam's domestic and export pepper prices increased sharply, reaching nearly 153,000 VND/kg, double that of last year. In the international market, the export price of black pepper reached over 4,300 USD/ton and white pepper nearly 6,000 USD/ton, an increase of about 1,000 USD per ton compared to the same period in 2023.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association, the average export price of black pepper in the first 6 months of 2024 reached 4,365 USD/ton, white pepper reached 5,983 USD/ton, an increase of 922 USD for black pepper and 1,028 USD for white pepper compared to the same period in the first 6 months of 2023.
