Male patient DVB, 28 years old, in Hau Giang, was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure in 2021, and has been undergoing regular dialysis in Hau Giang. The patient has high blood pressure, stage III heart failure, severe mitral and tricuspid regurgitation, pulmonary hypertension, acute pulmonary edema, pneumonia, and pleural effusion.
The patient had underlying anemia and poor nutritional status, which affected postoperative recovery. After 2 months of intensive medical treatment, the patient's heart failure, heart valve regurgitation, and pulmonary hypertension improved significantly.
Doctors decided to perform a kidney transplant on the patient with the donor being the patient's biological father.
The surgical team was led by Associate Professor, Dr. Thai Minh Sam (former Head of the Department of Urology, Cho Ray Hospital, Vice President of the Vietnam Urology - Nephrology Association) and more than 20 doctors and physicians from the two hospitals.

The surgeon removed the donor's left kidney by laparoscopic method and transplanted it into the recipient's right iliac fossa. After connecting the blood vessels, the kidney was red and had urine on the operating table. The ureter and bladder were connected, a JJ catheter was placed, and a drain was placed next to the kidney for monitoring. The surgery took about 6 hours. During the surgery and recovery, the patient was prescribed 8 units of blood and blood products.
After the transplant, the patient's paraclinical, cardiovascular, and respiratory indicators improved significantly, the surgical wound was dry, and the patient's general condition recovered well.
The second kidney transplant case, a female patient PTKT, 38 years old, in Kien Giang, was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure in March 2024, and was undergoing regular kidney dialysis at a local hospital. The patient was consulted and indicated for kidney transplant surgery from a donor, her biological sister. The transplanted kidney was taken from the left side and transplanted into the right iliac fossa. The surgery lasted about 5 hours and 30 minutes and was successful, and the patient was transferred to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for monitoring.
The health of the 2 kidney donors is stable, they have been discharged home and scheduled for a follow-up visit after 7 days. For the 2 kidney recipients, after 3 days of kidney transplant, the kidney function test results have returned to almost normal, the patients are closely monitored by doctors after the transplant at the Department of Nephrology - Artificial Kidney, expected to be discharged tomorrow (August 27) and have a follow-up visit according to the doctor's appointment.
Previously, on May 9, 2024, Can Tho Central General Hospital performed the first kidney transplant at the hospital and was also the first successful kidney transplant performed in the Mekong Delta region.
The success of 3 kidney transplants with the professional support of Cho Ray Hospital shows the efforts and remarkable progress of Can Tho Central General Hospital in implementing specialized techniques, especially in organ transplantation. This is the beginning of solid steps in the journey to master difficult and modern techniques, with the goal of becoming a special-class hospital, affirming its position as a final-line hospital under the Ministry of Health in the Mekong Delta region.
