According to a quick survey of more than 40 students at a primary school in Hanoi on how they manage their lucky money. The results show that most of them have plans to use the money usefully and effectively. More than 50% of them choose to save by putting it in a piggy bank or sending it to their parents, some of them put it in the bank, while others plan to buy things for themselves or buy gifts for relatives.

The homeroom teacher also noticed positive changes in the students’ financial management. She said that when faced with money, children now have more choices when they know how to distinguish between needs and wants to make reasonable spending decisions.

From the financial knowledge learned in class, children have learned to flexibly apply it at home. Like the story of Quang Thang (10 years old, Hong Ha Primary School). Once when going to the supermarket, he was "challenged" by his mother by using 100,000 VND to buy his favorite toy or school supplies. In the end, Thang chose to buy a pencil case because "I need to use it every day".

Besides being aware of the difficulty of earning money and the need to spend money carefully, children also know how to share with the disadvantaged in society. Once, Bao Nam (9 years old, Ban Mai Primary School) surprised and touched his mother when he used 50,000 VND of pocket money to help a disabled person on the street.

According to Bao Nam's parents, when accessing financial knowledge early in school, the child knows about financial skills such as earning money, saving money, spending money and donating money. She is proud that her child knows how to help others even when he does not have much money, this helps him to be more confident, live honestly and meaningfully.

The change of Quang Thang or Bao Nam in the way of using money is one of many "bright spots" contributing to the positive picture of tens of thousands of students accessing financial knowledge through the Cha-Ching project at 210 primary schools in Vietnam.

Directly teaching Cha-Ching, Ms. Ngoc (a teacher at Ban Mai Primary School) said that in her class, many children compete to "raise pigs" or cherish the idea of ​​doing business from recycled products to both reduce waste at school and help disadvantaged classmates.

Barriers in the process of helping Vietnamese children access financial knowledge

Financial education for children is necessary, but in reality, it is not simple. From the perspective of the unit coordinating the introduction of Cha-Ching into the curriculum at primary schools, Ms. Doan Bich Ngoc - Director of JA Vietnam identifies three barriers in the process of helping Vietnamese children access financial knowledge.

The first is the mindset barrier. Ms. Ngoc pointed out the fact that many families still believe that at primary school age, children only need to study and play, and that their parents and grandparents will take care of money issues. Second, parents themselves do not have enough financial knowledge and skills to talk, understand and advise their children. This can lead to parents teaching the wrong method, making children too passionate about money, or making children feel that they are being imposed with an inappropriate way of thinking. The third challenge comes from the fact that educational programs for children on financial management are still widespread, and have not been measured in terms of quality and content.

Cha-Ching equips nearly 80,000 Vietnamese children with financial knowledge

In terms of financial education in schools, many teachers have sought to simplify dry financial knowledge into vivid, easy-to-understand visual lessons for children using the Cha-Ching curriculum. Therefore, Cha-Ching not only helps train financial knowledge for young children but also helps teachers build knowledge and skills in communicating and sharing financial thinking with students.

The project focuses on developing four financial management skills including earning, saving, spending and donating for children aged 7-12. According to research, this is the appropriate stage to shape children's awareness and thinking. Appropriate financial knowledge is conveyed in an easy-to-understand and interesting way through cartoons or practical activities, helping children to absorb easily.

The Cha-Ching project has been implemented in primary schools in Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hoa Binh and is expected to continue to expand to other provinces and cities. Over the past 4 years, nearly 80,000 Vietnamese students have accessed Cha-Ching, through the guidance of nearly 2,100 teachers who have received certificates confirming their skills in training children in financial management. Cha-Ching classes on the online platform have also been successfully implemented so that students can participate in "learning while playing, playing while learning" activities right at home. Many competitions within the framework of the project have been organized, creating a useful playground for children to compete and practice money skills. By helping children behave better with money, the goal that Prudence Foundation and Prudential aim to do is to build financial confidence to create a solid foundation for the future for children.
