The worst King Kong game of all time had an unbelievable development time

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên24/10/2023

According to The Verge , after its official release on October 17, the King Kong-themed game Skull Island: Rise of Kong has received a lot of criticism. Many negative images and videos of the game have appeared on social media, complaining about outdated graphics and gameplay. IGN reported that players called it the worst game of 2023.

The Verge spoke to one of the development team members at the game's studio, IguanaBee, who said that work on Rise of Kong took place over a short period of one year, starting in June 2022 and ending in June 2023. That's because it was produced under contractual restrictions imposed by the publisher, the game company GameMill Entertainment.

Skull Island: Rise of Kong was developed in just one year.

A former IguanaBee developer said that this was common practice when working with publisher GameMill, which is notorious for contracting studios to develop games based on major IPs in short order, then releasing them to market quickly, without regard for quality.

And so, IguanaBee was stuck in a never-ending cycle of having to develop games on contract with publishers to keep the studio afloat.

It's worth noting that a typical game can take anywhere from 1-5 years to develop, depending on the scope of the game and the size of the studio. Even indie studios often take longer than a year to develop a game for modern systems. But developers at the studio have stated that IguanaBee tends to take on these types of 'hard to swallow' contracts in order to create games they actually want to make. But it seems that Skull Island: Rise of Kong   was not really successful.
