On his personal page, Filip Nguyen happily announced: "Finally I have it." Along with that, the goalkeeper with mixed Vietnamese-Czech blood showed off a photo of himself holding his citizen ID card.
Filip Nguyen becoming a Vietnamese citizen is very good news for this goalkeeper and his family. However, up to now, what name Filip Nguyen chose to have on his identity card is still a mystery.
Some information said that the goalkeeper whose father is Vietnamese has changed his name to Nguyen Filip, however, the goalkeeper of CAHN Club has not officially confirmed it.
Previously, Filip Nguyen was granted Vietnamese citizenship on December 6, after 5 years of efforts to realize his dream. With the successful naturalization, the goalkeeper born in 1992 is likely to be called up to the Vietnamese national team at the end of December, preparing for the 2023 Asian Cup.
In the latest move, the Football Federation of the Czech Republic (FACR) confirmed in writing to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) that Filip Nguyen has never played for the Czech Republic national team.
In fact, the goalkeeper born in 1992 has been called up to the Czech national team many times for friendly matches since 2020, including the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League and the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
However, Filip Nguyen has never played a single official minute on the field, even though he was registered as a reserve for the Czech national team. Thus, Filip Nguyen is eligible to play for the Vietnamese national team if he has the chance to be called up by coach Troussier.
With the addition of quality option Filip Nguyen, coach Philippe Troussier is having a pleasant headache with the goal position of the Vietnamese team.
Compared to No. 1 goalkeeper Dang Van Lam, Filip Nguyen has his own strengths, especially the ability to play with his feet - which is Van Lam's weakness. According to statistics, Filip Nguyen passes the ball an average of 19.7 times per match, with an accurate passing rate of 88.6%.
As of round 5 of V-League 2023/24, Filip Nguyen and CAHN Club ranked 5th with 2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, and 6 goals conceded. Meanwhile, Dang Van Lam and Binh Dinh ranked 8th with 2 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses, and 7 goals conceded.
Coach Philippe Troussier's choice of which goalkeeper will start for Vietnam at the 2023 Asian Cup depends on the performance of Filip Nguyen and Dang Van Lam in the V-League matches, as well as their performance and adaptation to the ball control style of play when they have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming training session.
