Everton could be relegated if found guilty of further violations

From being deducted 10 points, if discovered to have committed more violations, Everton may have to leave the Premier League at the end of this season.

Everton were docked 10 points on 17 November for breaching financial fair play rules. The independent disciplinary commission brought the charges in February 2023 and sentenced them this month. However, the new offence will see a shorter timeframe. Under the rules agreed by the 20 Premier League clubs in the summer, charges must be brought within 14 days for standard breaches. A hearing is then held within 84 days and a verdict is delivered within seven days.

The shortened processing time means that if Everton are found to have committed a new offence, they will be docked further points at the end of the season. In that case, the Goodison Park team is at risk of being relegated without any time to save themselves.

Everton had previously been docked 10 points by the Disciplinary Committee for alleged excessive losses. At the end of the 2021-2022 season, Everton's three-season loss was $155 million, $25 million more than the permitted $130 million.

The Goodison Park side are currently second to last with four points. Had they not been docked points, they would be 15th. The bottom three teams are relegated each season, but Everton still have 25 games to salvage their situation. They will also lodge an appeal.

Meanwhile, the battle between the Disciplinary Committee and Man City has not yet reached a conclusion. Man City is strongly contesting the 115 charges brought by the Committee in early 2023. Lawyers for the reigning Premier League champions have also been involved in a major legal battle with a lot of documents and evidence. The case is said to be less clear-cut than Everton's. The trial date could be October 2024 and the verdict could come in early 2025.
