The race for the top scorer title at EURO 2024 ended with a surprising ending after the final match between England and Spain at the Olympic Stadium (Berlin, Germany), which took place in the early morning of July 15.
This year's top scorer title was not awarded "solely" to any individual, but was awarded jointly to 6 players who scored 3 goals, namely Harry Kane (England), Dani Olmo (Germany), Ivan Schranz (Slovakia), Jamal Musiala (Germany), Cody Gakpo (Netherlands) and Georges Mikautadze (Georgia).
The question is, why is there such a strange thing?
In previous EUROs, if the players at the top of the scorer list had the same number of goals, the secondary indicators were taken into account. For example, the number of minutes played or the number of assists. If the players scored the same number of goals, the player with more assists or fewer minutes played would win the title.
At EURO 2012, Fernando Torres scored 3 goals, equal to Cristiano Ronaldo, Alan Dzagoev, Mario Gomez, Mario Balotelli and Mario Mandzukic. However, Torres still won the top scorer title thanks to the most assists.
At EURO 2024, before the final took place, Harry Kane, Dani Olmo, Ivan Schranz, Jamal Musiala, Cody Gakpo and Georges Mikautadze all had 3 goals. The tournament organizers agreed: if by the end of the final, no one still scored more than 3 goals, the top scorer title would be divided equally among 6 players, not belonging to any individual.
Spain's Convincing Journey to the EURO 2024 Crown
After 90 minutes at the Olympic Stadium, both Harry Kane and Dani Olmo, the two players competing for the top scorer title, were... "silent". That means all 6 players leading the scoring list will be recognized as the joint top scorers of EURO 2024.
Thus, EURO 2024 becomes the tournament with the most players winning the top scorer title in history with 6 names, surpassing EURO 1992 (4 top scorers) or EURO 1960 (5 top scorers).
