On February 14, the ophthalmology department (Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital Dong Hoi, Quang Binh) announced that it had just coordinated with the biochemistry - hematology - blood transfusion department to successfully perform the first eye surgery using fibrin biological glue researched and produced by the hospital itself.
This success helps the hospital become the fourth unit in the country to produce and apply fibrin glue in eye surgery, opening a new step forward in ophthalmic treatment.
The surgery took place that same morning. The first patient at this hospital to receive the new surgical method was Mr. Nguyen Thanh N. (52 years old, Dong Hoi).
Mr. N. had suffered from pterygium for many years and had previously undergone surgery with sutures. After undergoing surgery on his remaining eye with fibrin glue, he no longer had the pain or foreign feeling in his eye as before.
Dr. Tran Anh Duong, head of the ophthalmology department at the Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital, said that pterygium is a common eye disease, often found in people who work outdoors in dusty, windy, and harsh sunlight.
Previously, the main treatment method was surgical removal of the pterygium and autologous conjunctival grafting, using sutures to fix the graft. However, this method has the disadvantage of causing a feeling of irritation, eye irritation, and risk of infection and slow recovery.
Recently, doctors at the Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital have successfully researched and produced fibrin biological glue. Notably, this glue is produced from the patient's own blood, ensuring high safety and does not cause rejection or allergic reactions.
Fibrin glue has the effect of naturally fixing the graft without the need for sutures, helping to reduce pain, limit complications and shorten recovery time.
The self-production and application of fibrin glue marks an important step forward in the treatment of eye diseases at the Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital.
"With this success, the hospital has become the fourth unit in the country to produce fibrin glue. We will continue to research and improve this technology for wider application in other eye surgeries, not just stopping at pterygium grafting," said Dr. Duong.
