AFP news agency quoted Mr. Scholz at a press conference after talks with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chisinau as saying that Berlin is closely monitoring further developments surrounding the attack.

“Ukraine has been preparing for a military operation in the Kursk region in great secrecy and without consultation,” the German leader said. “This is an operation that is limited in space and probably also in time.”

Earlier, Mr. Scholz affirmed that Berlin would continue to be the most active supporter of Kiev in Europe after controversy over what some called Germany's "wavering" towards Ukraine on domestic political issues.

Mr Scholz's ruling coalition, which has struggled to agree on a budget, plans to halve aid next year, saying the "shortfall" will be covered by a plan by the Group of Seven (G7) major economies to lend Ukraine $50 billion.

Meanwhile, German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck stated that even if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election in November and decides to suspend military support for Ukraine, Berlin will continue to support Kiev and not leave them "alone".

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, on the same day, Reuters news agency quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as saying that the country's armed forces understand the intentions that Russia is trying to carry out on the Pokrovsk front in eastern Ukraine and Kiev is strengthening its forces to deal with it.

In a televised speech, Mr Zelensky urged Kiev's partners to stick to the agreed timetable for supplying ammunition to the Ukrainian army.

The Ukrainian leader also noted that the offensive launched by Ukraine against the Kursk region continues and Ukrainian forces have taken control of some areas.

Also on August 21, speaking to the Indian community in Poland two days before his visit to Ukraine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi once again affirmed that his country supports lasting peace in Europe.

"Our position is clear - this is not an era of war. This is a time for us to come together to fight the challenges that threaten humanity. Therefore, India believes in diplomacy and dialogue," Mr. Modi stressed.
