Dien Bien Industrial Promotion supports to improve macadamia processing capacity Dak Lak: Officially exporting the first 10 tons of macadamia to the Korean market |
Open direction for key local economic development
Macadamia is a tree that Dien Bien province has prioritized to develop to become a key tree in agricultural restructuring. While many districts still have difficulties in implementing, some even asked to stop implementing the project, Tuan Giao district has implemented it very successfully and become the district with the largest macadamia area in the country.
Macadamia trees in Dien Bien province, since 2002, were introduced by the late Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan for experimental planting in some districts and Dien Bien Phu city. In 2009, they were introduced to Muong Ang district through a number of programs and projects and were then expanded by people and businesses.
By the end of 2023, the entire Dien Bien province had planted more than 7,200 hectares, of which, Tuan Giao district alone had planted over 2,500 hectares, accounting for 35% of the province's total area. The total macadamia harvest output of the province in 2023 reached 373 tons of nuts.
To make Dien Bien macadamia a prestigious, high-quality brand in the market, the locality needs to build a model to manage and control the quality of products with protected trademarks. |
Mr. Le Xuan Canh, Chairman of Tuan Giao District People's Committee, said: Determining that macadamia is a suitable and key crop, bringing high economic value, promoting its potential and strength in greening barren land, bare hills and replacing ineffective crops, Tuan Giao District is still persistent with the goal of expanding the area.
“The macadamia market is large, the demand is high and continues to increase. Moreover, not everywhere can grow this type of tree, while Tuan Giao macadamia has good productivity and quality, the development potential cannot be wasted. Choosing not to follow the mass is the only way to win”, Mr. Le Xuan Canh emphasized.
Also according to Mr. Canh: "One of the prerequisites for this direction is first of all because Tuan Giao district is favored by nature, with ideal terrain and environmental conditions for macadamia trees to grow. However, the most important reason is the determination of the entire political system and the consensus of the people."
For more than 3 years now, in addition to propaganda and mobilizing people, Tuan Giao district has focused on research to bring the most suitable macadamia variety into cultivation. At the same time, actively finding stable output for this tree. Therefore, the policy of planting macadamia has been supported by people and has achieved initial results.
According to the district leaders, in 2023, the whole district had 2,800 households participating in planting nearly 1,700 hectares of macadamia trees, with a survival rate of over 90%. This is an extremely encouraging result, opening up a new direction, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction and improving people's lives.
Promoting that result, in 2024, 5,500 households registered to plant new macadamia trees. Bringing the total number of households participating in macadamia planting in the area to nearly 8,000 households, accounting for nearly 50% of the agricultural population. Therefore, the newly planted area in 2024 reached 3,300 hectares, bringing the total macadamia area in the district to more than 6,000 hectares and making Tuan Giao the district with the largest macadamia area in the country.
With a strategic vision, Tuan Giao district has set a goal that by the end of 2025, the entire district will have nearly 10,000 hectares of macadamia trees, of which 8,000 hectares will be planted by local people. On average, each household will own about 100 macadamia trees.
Making Dien Bien macadamia a prestigious brandSharing about the strengths of macadamia trees at the Macadamia Planting Festival in Tuan Giao District in 2024, Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Hung, Vice President of the Vietnam Macadamia Association, affirmed that macadamia is popular in 22 countries with a population of more than 2.2 billion people. This is a great opportunity for the development of the macadamia industry in Dien Bien, especially in Tuan Giao District.
"However, to make Dien Bien macadamia a prestigious, high-quality brand in the domestic and international markets, it is necessary to build a model to manage and control the quality of products protected by the "Dien Bien macadamia" certification mark," said Mr. Nguyen Lan Hung.

According to Secretary of Dien Bien Provincial Party Committee Tran Quoc Cuong, to turn macadamia, coffee and other high-value crops into a long-term and effective direction, Tuan Giao district needs to focus on investing in developing the agricultural and forestry sectors, especially focusing on strategic crops such as macadamia.
For sustainable development, it is necessary to apply a production linkage model that ensures the harmony of interests between people, businesses and investors. At the same time, it is associated with the goal of greening barren hills and contributing to the protection of the environment and forest resources.
"In addition, it is necessary to encourage and support investors to build local processing factories to increase product value, build brands and expand markets. Strengthen promotion and introduction of Dien Bien macadamia products, find stable output for people" - Secretary of Dien Bien Provincial Party Committee emphasized.
Since the macadamia tree took root in Tuan Giao land and produced good yield and quality, it has opened up a new direction in economic development, poverty reduction and promised to become a tree that enriches the people in the highlands here. Tuan Giao district has persisted with the goal of expanding the area.
Macadamia is a forestry tree and a multi-purpose tree with good growth potential and high economic, social and environmental efficiency. The tree can be grown in large-scale concentrated production, and can be planted in upstream protection forests to create water sources, contributing to increasing forest coverage and protecting the ecological environment.
Because macadamia is a perennial crop, it takes over 3 years to start bearing fruit and over 5 years to achieve high productivity, Tuan Giao district has both increased people's confidence by implementing other economic models, restoring and improving the productivity and quality of existing trees, especially fruit trees, and finding a sustainable direction for macadamia.
To make people believe in growing macadamia trees, Tuan Giao district has stepped up propaganda about the value of macadamia nuts and committed to purchasing all products. Previously, Tuan Giao district signed a memorandum of understanding with TH Group Joint Stock Company regarding macadamia planting. Specifically, the locality committed to creating all conditions according to regulations for TH Group and its member units to implement macadamia planting projects in the area. In return, TH Group committed to purchasing all macadamia nuts in those projects for 50 years, with unit prices according to Australian market prices.
It can be seen that Tuan Giao district is on the right track in making macadamia a key industrial crop of the locality according to the value chain model, from seedling production, planting to preservation, processing and consumption of products. Along with the support, leadership and close direction of Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee, there is also the determination, daring to think, daring to do of the district leaders, the trust, support and consensus of the people, and the long-term commitment of large enterprises.
