On December 12, at Tram Chim National Park in Tam Nong district, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province held a ceremony to announce the Project "Conservation and development of red-crowned cranes in Tram Chim National Park for the period 2022-2032."

Attending the event were representatives of leaders of central ministries and branches; international organizations, representatives of the Thai Embassy in Vietnam, non-governmental organizations, delegations from Thailand, domestic and foreign experts.

Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee Pham Thien Nghia said that Tram Chim National Park has an area of 7,313 hectares; it is the remaining wetland ecosystem of the ancient Dong Thap Muoi. This place has high biodiversity with 130 species of flora, 130 species of freshwater aquatic products; it is home to more than 230 species of endemic birds of the region, especially the red-crowned crane - a rare and precious bird species that is in danger of extinction and is of international concern for protection.

In 2012, Tram Chim National Park was recognized as the 4th Ramsar site in Vietnam and the 2,000th in the world.

According to Mr. Pham Thien Nghia, the red-crowned crane is a rare species, listed in the World Red Book. In the past, thousands of red-crowned cranes migrated to Tram Chim to live. However, due to many different reasons, the red-crowned crane population here is gradually decreasing.

Research, cooperation in transferring, raising and preserving red-crowned cranes is an urgent requirement. Because this bird is a cultural and spiritual symbol in the spiritual life of people since ancient times...

To realize the goal of "bringing back the cranes," Dong Thap has developed and approved the Project "Conservation and development of red-crowned cranes in Tram Chim National Park in the period of 2022-2032." The goal is to restore and develop the red-crowned crane flock in Tram Chim National Park by raising and releasing them back into the wild. Within 10 years (from 2022-2032), 100 cranes will be raised and released with a minimum of 50 surviving. The released red-crowned cranes will be able to reproduce, survive in the wild and live year-round in Tram Chim National Park.

The Project includes many activities such as receiving and raising transferred cranes, at the same time, researching the reproduction and re-releasing red-crowned cranes into the wild at Tram Chim National Park; renovating and restoring the ecosystem and habitat of red-crowned cranes in the National Park, aiming to restore and preserve the typical biodiversity values of the ancient Dong Thap Muoi region; building a sustainable ecological agricultural production model (rice), combining well between ensuring the livelihoods of people and the environment around the area where cranes are released into the natural environment...

Up to now, Dong Thap province has signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the parties and a memorandum of agreement on activities with Thai partners; implemented a number of ecosystem restoration programs in Tram Chim National Park. At the same time, implemented an ecological rice farming model towards organic agriculture around the buffer zone; built facilities for raising cranes; communicated and provided technical training for staff caring for red-crowned cranes.

The restoration and development of the crane flock in Tram Chim National Park is significant in preserving biodiversity as well as the cultural and spiritual life of the local people. The success of the project contributes significantly to the conservation of the red-crowned crane flock in the lower Mekong region, which is facing the risk of extinction./.
